AT&T Mobility CEO: 3G iPhone Coming in 'Months'

iPhone speculation has remained at an all time high these week. Reports of iPhone shortages has generated analyst speculation that the iPhone could be sooner than expected... despite June expectations.

While we don't put too much value in this idle speculation, Gizmodo reports on a revealing comment from AT&T's Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega from a lunch at CTIA 2008. Ralph de la Vega said that he expected all of their smart integrated devices to be 3G in the next couple months.

When asked about the iPhone specifically, he responded with "Let me repeat what I said: I think that you're going to see our integrated devices be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future, and I mean months. That should be clear enough."

Our Buyer's Guide recommendation stands: buy only if you absolutely need it, updates are coming.

"Months" is too vague. I was born ~ 390 months ago.

'Months' can be anything between June 2008 (2 'months') and March 2009 (still less than a 'year').

he did say couple of months before that. but it wasn't a direct quote from gizmodo.

regardless, the implication is clear. he was in conversation, it's going to be soon.

He says "couple of months" and "not-too-distant future" so I'm definitely thinking a May-October timeframe. (October for those of you who see a holiday season refresh/iPhone 2).

So now we only are waiting to see it the EDGE version will live along side the 3G version or not. I'm guessing it will be only 3G.

Its going to be paper launched at WWDC in June...just my thoughts...like some of the other posts here...here's whats going to happen..

1. Steve will go off explaining all the numbers of iPhones sold.
2. Talk about the 2.0 firmware and the development of it and releasing it.
3. Announce the new 3G iPhone, keep the current model priced at 299, release the 3G version at some other price point above the current. I doubt a design change of the phone, maybe a FEW cosmetic changes but thats about it, no total redesign that everyone on here is talking about.
4......etc

Just my thoughts...

I know when its coming

Ok so dont believe me if u don't want to, just dont call me a liar, my cousin is a lawyer who writes patents, and lucky for me, one of his clients is apple (he actually helped write the multi-touch for more than two fingers patent, and told me about it before it was patented. he says it will be like the technology they show in "Minority Report.") He told me the next iPhone will be in October 08.
This was in october 07 that he told me, so I don't know how valid this is. But if June isn't the month, you heard it here first, October.

I wonder how apple really feels about AT&T. If an apple employee said something like that we would be reading about the legal action.

Here is the thing though...WWDC is a Software Developers Conference. Apple doesn't do hardware that this conference. I think the announcement will be a separate event in the weeks or month before the conference.

Hahaha very true! Maybe this will make Apple hate AT&T enough to make them break the contract and start one with Verizon! ...ok maybe not.

Cool, I'm all set for the 2012 release in the Netherlands . Then they could announce it together with the TV shows and movie rentals.

I'm still going to say (guess?) that the release, or at least the announcement, of iPhone 2.0 (not iPhone OS 2.0) will be at WWDC in June. Just seems right.

Phone by WWDC

We know the App Store opens in late June. So the SDK will have to be done before that, so developers can polish software for the store opening. So, we will have SDK 1.0 by the WWDC. The iPhone OS 2.0 features are in the SDK. So OS 2.0 will be ready by WWDC. New hardware will run OS 2.0.

It only makes sense to have the new hardware in developer's hands so they can test OS 2.0 apps on physical phones. So I see the new phone coming out in May with OS 2.0 and there will be a decent beta SDK by then, and the final 1.0 SDK by WWDC which is early June, and this gives developers time to polish apps by the time App Store opens in late June.

So the new iPhone comes in May. (with OLED screen - thinner and less power, making room for the 3G and GPS)

If you're trying to be sarcastic, you don't have to be just because I'm younger than you, and it makes you feel powerful to think that my brains not devoloped enough to remember something that my cousin (who writes the friggin iphone patents) clearly.

if you weren't being sarcastic, never mind.

You make a good argument. I doubt Apple would want to open up the App Store with only a couple of big name apps. Further information to consider.... hhhmmmm....

July or Before

Key phrase in first para. = "next couple months"

Key Phrase in second para. = "not-too-distant future, and I mean months"

My Take ..... Within 3 months from today's date - at the latest ..... Best case 2+ months or around 65-70 days .....

Either way - for sure before or during the 4th of July Week .....

Last edited by AnselLovesApple : Apr 2, 2008 at 08:16 PM. Reason: added word (week) to read better .....

so......we're talking about an ANNOUNCEMENT, because we know we will see the FCC report about this months before it's released, thanks to our good ol' FOIA. There's no way this is being released in the next "month"...or probably even two. I dont' think we're going to see a surprise intro like so many of you seem to be hoping for....
