using .png as icon how?

I am trying to make this my finder icon..
http://jamisonx.deviantart.com/art/S...-icon-69360018

I have candybar so it should be easy but I just cannot drag that into the icon for finder. Does anyone know why?

Hi,

to use a .png file as icon do this:

1) Open the .png file in Preview
2) Press command-A to select the entire image
3) Press command-C to copy the selection
4) Control-Click on the file/folder you would like to change
5) Click the icon (so there is a frame around it)
6) Press command-V to paste the image into that

Done. Enjoy!
/Rupert

thank you and yes your right normally that would work fine.

However have you ever tried to do that with the finder icon?
That won't work.

Oops, missed that you would like to change the Finder icon. Yes, that won't work. I guess you have to change the .icns file inside the Finder application bundle which is located here:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/Finder.icns

So I think you have to create a custom .icns file and replace the existing one.

hence my original questions.
I am asking how one would make that file.
I can't change the extension.

If I could I would be able to just drag and drop it into the section for the finder icon in candybar.

Icon Composer is an Apple app that you can optionally install as part of the Developer package. It's probably a bit more than you really need, but it would allow you to create an .icns file.

That said, there should be a fairly simple way to use CandyBar to do this. It might involve just converting the .png file to something like .jpeg or .gif, but I have no idea, as I've never used the app before.

Yea. But instead of installing all the Developers' Tools, just download this lighweight app.

Transparency!

I have a PNG with transparent Bg and I want to set this as an icon for one of my drives.

However, when I paste it into the Info panel the BG is set to white and not transparent.

Anyone know how to do this?

I registered just so I could tell you that your post did have value to me, since it explained perfectly how to set my new corsair 16 gb memory stick to have a cool icon I found.

You rule!

No your post's did have value, maybe not on topic ha. Your Desktop looks amazing, got a source to the wallpaper's page, too small for a large screen.

Sorry to go off topic. But, is there an easy way to make those stack containers to stay on top even with the 'sort by' setting set to 'date added.' I've googled and read numerous posts regarding it and I cant seem to find any complete solutions to this problem.
