Hey there guys/gals, I have noticed on my powerbook that you aren't able to watch different region dvds on a mac. You have 5 chances to watch dvds from various regions, and after the 5th time, you will only be able to watch dvds in the last region dvd you watched.

Is there any type of software that can get around this?

I really can't decide whether to change my Region to 1 or 2!!

On most PowerBooks you can use VLC, which eschews region checking. On newer Mac laptops though it's forced by the drive and there's no good way around it.

i had no luck with vlc - region codes seem to be hard coded in the drive itself as of lately, and not only an issue with apple's DVD player anymore. therefore, you cannot circumvent it using a different player anymore.

however, you may want to take a look here:

read it carefully, esp. pages 1 to 3... you should think twice if you really do want to patch your drive's firmware. it worked for me...
