Mossberg Denies 3G iPhone Knowledge

Walt Mossberg denies having any specific knowledge of the 3G iPhone's release, despite matter-of-fact comments to the contrary last week.
Quote:
But Walt notes that in the clip, he's making an aside during a larger point about data networks, and says that in any event, he doesn't know if it's correct. So where'd it come from? It's a ballpark estimate, he says, based on... the same speculation the rest of us are seeing.

Is he retracting his statement or clarifing that it is just speculation based on the same rumors we see?

I think he knows, the statement was just too straight forward and confident.

this is exactly what i suspected. he was making a ballpark estimate in the heat of the moment. i don't know why anyone ever believed his prediction in the first place! apple release the 3g iphone before wwdc? pfff. not a chance.

the next gen iphone will be announced on june 9th and be available in stores june 30th - exactly one year after iphone 1.0. is it really that difficult to figure out? it won't come any sooner than that. jeez people.

I think he was right, and he does have info in advance of certain Apple products. He has a good relation with Apple. He had to take back his statement I'm sure Steve got mad, and threatened to not give products in advance anymore.

The law of causation virtually does apply to iPods, though; every September we see a refresh of part of the line.

Steve regularly does a Vulcan mind-meld on Walt. That's why he knows so much. Steve, that is. Walt has been reduced to a heap of quivering custard, as anyone can easily see.

Anything he knows would be under NDA. As John Gruber pointed out today, back in July he thought the iPhone would get flash within 2 months.

A bit over confident in the obvious speculation department, was he? He sure did make the confirmation in an authoritarian fashion. Hopefully, this won't turn out the way the 3 Ghz G5 announcement did at WWDC.

well...maybe it's not obvious. but needless to say the blogosphere is just out of control at times. way too much hype over hollow statements made by people who don't have the right to make them (ex: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post...ear-quote.html)

all i am saying is that the 3g iphone will come along with the release of the 2.0 software release. it makes a lot more sense. they will also want to roll out the red carpet for the next gen iphone. not just put it out on any given tuesday. wwdc is when it's going to happen, i can assure you.

and as for mossberg, the conspiracies that he had to retract his statement because he upset jobs are rediculous. that didn't happen. if anything, jobs is thanking him for the free press and extra hype.

He may or may not know more than the rest of us.

But with the CEO of ATT statement that all their smart phones would be 3G in a matter of months, I could probably make the same statement with the same confidence.

We all know it is coming. Even Jobs has said it will come... eventually.

He could have just thrown that comment in because he was on a roll with everything else. A lot of the issues he brought up at that meaning were said with a lot of confidence -- "only geeks connect their computers to TV's, there is no real internet/TV bridge solution out there" and the iPhone could have been another clever opinion to state with gusto.

Just a quick suggestion:
Shouldn't this be on page one, as the original story was posted there. Not everyone who saw the original will necessarily see the clarification if it is buried away on page two.

I wouldn't really write-off the possibility, it would make sense that apple releases a major update within one year of releasing the iPhone and absolutely no later.

What i really think is that the 3G iPhone will be released a month or so before WWDC, but not made available till shortly after WWDC. That would also kind of fit with what Walt said.

But then again, what do i know

I updated the page 1 story with the clarification.

I didn't think it was worth wasting a whole other story on it. In the end, it doesn't change anything. Everyone still expects the 3G iPhone in the same timeframe.
