Is that part of the maintenance thing?

I see it every now and then at night, and it makes the fans go up.

I've encountered this behaviour too, usually just after waking my computer from sleep. Running Leopard 10.5.2 on a Mac Pro.

The Daily, Weekly, and Monthly maintenance tasks that Mac OS X runs in the background periodically (or on next wake if your machine has been sleeping) use these shell programs to accomplish their goals. This is pretty normal.
