MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1

Apple has released MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1.

Quote:
This update fixes several issues to improve the stability of MacBook Pro computers.

After the firmware is successfully applied to your Mac, your Boot ROM Version will be:

MBP21.00A5.B08 or MBP31.0070.B07

You can confirm the version of the Boot ROM installed on your computer using System Profiler.

To complete the firmware update process, please follow the instructions in the updater application (/Applications/Utilities/MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update.app). The updater will launch automatically when the Installer closes.

Isn't this old news?

Edit: Oops, I guess that last one was 1.5, not 1.5.1
Any difference?

No it's now 1.5.ONE instead of 1.5 and I'm guessing this fixes the problem that screens didn't worked anymore. At least I hope so!

It wasn't showing on mine either (MBP 2.2GHz). I donwloaded it from Apples site and it told me my computer did not need the update.

Not sure why...

I believe that it's only for the 2,1 and 3,1 MBPs. Penryn MBPs carry the 4,1 model identifiers, IIRC.

Quote:
MBP21.00A5.B08 or MBP31.0070.B07
But that doesn't explain why Jestered's 3,1 MBP didn't want the update (I have the same MBP as you and Software Update pulled it down from the internets for me).

The fact that me and many others with early 2007 models can't wake up the screen after putting their MBP to sleep confuses me as to why the latest firmware update doesn't address my computer's issues, instead it says my computer doesn't need the update?

Why? It definitely needs an update to fix a bloody serious issue!

Yeah, that is what I thought too. I just checked my Boot ROM version and it says I have, "Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07".

That is very weird. The last firmware I updated was a week or so ago when everyone else did it too. I have no idea how I have the updated Boot ROM version though. Oh and I am the only person that touches my computer so no one else did it. The only other person that could have access to my computer is my wife and she def didn't do it. She can barely turn hers on much less updating firmware on mine.

Weird!

I have this problem, but it is related to the airport malfunctioning, and not connecting properly.

That last firmware release never showed up for me on my Software Update... I wonder if this one will. I left my MBP at home today, will check when I get back.

This installs the same firmware version(s) as update 1.5. Apparently, the only difference is in the updater itself. According to xlr8yourmac.com, the 1.5.1 release "fixed an issue some had with the 1.5 updater not applying".

So, if you updated your firmware using 1.5, and thus have firmware version MBP21.00A5.B08 or MBP31.0070.B07, then you can ignore this update (and it won't show up for you in Software Update).

For those wondering exactly which models this efi update is for, it is only for:

MacBookPro2,1 (This is the 17" C2D (Merom))
MacBookPro3,1 (This is the 15" or 17" C2D, LED backlit)

In addition to having one of those 3 models, your current EFI Boot Rom Version needs to be one of the following:

MBP21.88Z.00A5.B01.0611031449
MBP21.88Z.00A5.B02.0612151247
MBP21.88Z.00A5.B07.0708131147
MBP31.88Z.0070.B00.0705251924
MBP31.88Z.0070.B05.0709261143
MBP31.88Z.0070.B02.0706181323

You can check your machine's info in System Profiler in the Hardware
Overview.

Hope that clears things up!

I can't really advise you - all I can suggest is to review the 1.5 update forum thread, and see how common problems were. At the time, whatever problems there were didn't seem very significant to me, and I was hoping for some improvement, so I did the update. I didn't see any noticeable difference, for better or worse. YMMV.

I fell under this category and got the update. I'm not experiencing anything out of the ordinary so far.

Installed with no issues on my MBP 15" 2.4.

No perceptible difference (good or bad) so far...

Interesting, so that's what the Firmware update did. I was actually having that problem but didn't realize it was happening to other people. Hopefully this fixes things up nicely.

I did the update. After rebooting to complete it, my screen stopped working and my MBP doesn't boot up anymore. No bong sound when restarting. Caps lock lights up, number lock lights up and the volume increase/decrease keys make the expected sounds.

It's almost as if I'm at the desktop with no screen. However, I've had the power and battery disconnected - so that's no possible. I also haven't logged in. So my four month old MBP is finished. This is really unbelievable.

The biggest difference with this update is the fact it installs on MBP31.0070.B05 machines. WOOHOO!

Hey the firmware update has also fixed the sleep/wake problems on my 2.2 SR MBP.
I'm very happy that my very pricey machine is finally working as it should!
Also for those interested, the firmware update changed my desktop background to the leopard default supernova/space/stars image. But this one was easy to fix
