Week 12 Macbook Air busted

My MBA is 1.6/80.

The fan does not work suddenly and stays at 0 rpm (istat pro, smcfancontrol), no matter how many times I've restarted it. I've been using coolbook to adjust voltage and smcfancontrol to adjust the max fan speed, but do not think it is really the culprit as there are other reported cases online. I've run the hardware test and there was an error shown: "4MOT/1/40000002:Exhaust-0". Also it shows in the activity monitor the UserEventAgent(117) is not responding. The weather in the UK now is around 13 and the temp of my MBA is hovering between 62-70 C (istat-pro) in-door all the time, just surfing the net!

I've been loving this machine up till the moment the fan stopped. It is really frustrating as this is my first intel mac, and the fact that i'm relying on it for preparing notes for the approaching exams makes it even worse. I really doubt its reliability at the moment. Any advice? Any quick service from apple? Or do you think I should replace it?

Did the fan problems start before or after you installed the fan control software?

If before, schedule appointment with Apple store Genius bar.

Otherwise probably the fan control software need to be removed or a fresh OS install/ updates should be necessary.

Clone your HDD, and then reinstall OS X with the dvds that came with MBA. All coolbook and fan control setting would be wiped.

If fan is still dead, it needs to be back to Apple (and you are ready to go, since you already made the backup and wiped all your personal files).

just wondering if the hardware test shows error, i guess it means a hardware problem.(?) Does reinstalling really help in that case? as i'm really busy these days and it takes time to install all the apps back...

Also, how long do you think such repair will take? any experience??

I'd reinstall the OS before taking it into the store. I'm really not sure what Apple's policy is on SMC Fancontrol, coolbook or anything else that overrides their defaults.

Not necessarily. It could be reading the RPM of the fan, expecting 2000rpm, but seeing 0rpm, therefore giving the error.

I would try what another poster suggested, backup and reinstall.

If coolbook was meant to run on a mac Apple would have included something similar in os x.

There crappy little apps that tweak the computer probably are what cause most peoples issues.

weird I had the same problem today. After resetting the PRAM, the fan eventually kicked in about a minute after booting up. I'll be watching it from now on for sure.

hahaha yeah ok. Enjoy running your stock Macbook Air without installing a single non Apple preinstalled app.
