Apple Releases New iMacs

As predicted, Apple released new iMacs today. The new iMacs include faster processors bringing the low end up to 2.4GHz and with the top end reaching 3.06GHz. The high end 24" 3.06GHz iMac also introduces the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS (512MB) video card.
Quote:
"The iMac’s gorgeous aluminum and glass all-in-one design has been an incredible hit with our customers and is just one of the reasons Mac sales are growing three and a half times faster than PC sales," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "With the latest Intel processors, a faster new graphics option and more memory, customers now have even more reasons to love the iMac."
The iMacs also incorporate the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors with 6MB L2 cache and faster 1066 MHz front-side bus. Specs are listed below:

20", 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128MB. $1199
20", 2.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO 256MB, $1499
24", 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO 256MB, $1799
24", 3.06GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512MB, $2199

Did they stop using Mobile Chips? None of the mobile chips have a 1066 FSB....

Nice to see a low clocked 8800 in there. The 1066 MHz front side bus is interesting as well.

Just in time for the "economic stimulus" monies that will begin to hit bank accounts today in the US.

Nice, predictable bump. I sure wish I could justify replacing my original white CD 20" iMac... but I'm not there yet. For everyone else, enjoy!

Now that the iMac has reached 3 Ghz, isn't this really the defining moment for Intel where Jobs forsaked IBM and the G5 because they did not reach 3ghz when promised, back a couple of years?

It might be.

Looks like IBM and Intel were both limited by technology and materials at the same time.

Meh, you can only update the graphics card on the 24 inch model.

Disappointed..

When will we see the next (real) upgrade?

800Mhz DDR2? this is something new, right?

You have a MacBook, isn't that just a portable, battery powered Mac Mini?

Its only the GS, but nonetheless its nice to see a halfway decent GPU re-enter the iMac lineup.

3GHz reminds me of the the fabled G5. Would never see that running at 3GHz inside an iMac let alone dual core.

Seems pretty impressive. Still I'm happy with my matte iMac.

It looks like Apple isn't using the mobile chips. None of the current mobile chips have a 1066 FSB. It is more likely they are using a desktop chip and underclocking the bus (yet still overclocking the cpu). Also there aren't any mobile chips that take 800Mhz DDR2 ram yet either.

That is one of the first things that I had noticed as well.

Now, I wish they would bump the laptop RAM to those speeds.

Hardware update on a Monday?

The AAPL employees must be taking tomorrow off for GTA4.
