iPod iPod HD to Flash Memory: does it work, and who has done it?

Folks,

I have a 4G iPod that is dead, I suspect it is the hard drive. Soon, I will be in the possession of a 3G iPod as well.

Hard drives eventually fail, and I like the robustness of having a wholly solid-state music player. If it worked, I would use it for years. Trouble is, I haven't the cash for an iPod Touch, and I generally enjoy tinkering as an aside.

I've searched, scoured, and read the internet until my eyes have grown red. Despite various reports, I can't seem to pin down if the conversions ACTUALLY work. Someone here has to have made it work! What I want to know is the following:

1. Has anyone effectively replaced their iPod (3G and/or 4G) hard drives with flash memory (such as CF cards)?

2. Where did you get the parts or adapters?

3. Has it worked well? Any major problems?

Someday, when I have real money, I might get an iPod touch, but I love the older ones, the simplicity is divine. It would be pretty cool to get one, with a flash brain, that would truly and finally be reliable.

I appreciate the reply, and I recognize that it is difficult, but there is a certain appeal for legacy devices and sometimes a little elbow grease is needed to make them work right.

Many people would love for their old computers, iPods, electronics, etc. to continue to function while replacing old or worn parts. This is my quest here.

Yeah, the Touch is a modern replacement, and is in fact very cool...which goes with being very expensive.

I'll hold out hope that SOMEONE on this board, somewhere, has managed to make this work.

I've been following his work closely! I was mostly curious if anyone here has managed to make it work in the meantime.
