This is a pretty heavy string of updates. My day just keeps getting better. Add to that a SCSI card in my server has come back from the dead and brought with it a drive that I couldn't fix all weekend.... Wooha!

This is odd. I get this when trying to install via software update:

running repair permissions changes nothing. |

Yep, I got the alert for Bluetooth 1.3.3. Tsk.
I didn't intall it because there wasn't a tick by it. I guessed my PowerBook already had it, but now I think about it that's just silly. Guess I should install it now. Starting to want Panther now... I wish they'd hurry up with delivering my Up-to-date application...

1.3.3 Fixes major security hole
If you're still running 10.2.8 then I highly recommend downloading Bluetooth 1.3.3. There is a major security hole in previous versions with an exploit as follows:

Plug in a bluetooth dongle.
Reboot
At the bluetooth mouse configuration panel select "Bluetooth help" from the help menu.
When Help Viewer loads click "iPod help".
Select the "iPod manual" link.
When Safari loads enter an ftp URL e.g. ftp://ftp.apple.com
You will now get a finder with root privilages without having to enter any passwords.
Bob |

"Restart will be required."
?!? I though restarts for installations would no longer be required in Panther. I thought that was one of its new features. That's what I get for thinking.

I'd never heard of that as being a panther feature, but it would be nice. I have heard that simply logging out and then back in accomplishes the same thing as restarting.

The reason restart is required is to restart all the relevant daemons - a log out/log in will not restart them... However it would easily be possible for apple to make non-restart installers, all it would need is to have an install script that sends a sig-HUP to the relevant services.

as a person who is trying to build up a network via bluetooth, I hope this update will help me.. Actually I dont know even if it is possible or not.. my PB doesnt even seem to care about the "bluetooth network" icon on my PC's taskbar!

Networking via Bluetooth? Umm, why? WiFi has greater speed and range, and is designed for that purpose, unlike Bluetooth which was designed for peripherals...

Anyone with built-in Bluetooth care to comment? On the subject of Bluetooth... I got an Axim X3i (PocketPC) over the weekend, and a Socket SDIO Bluetooth adaptor... I then got a program called PocketMac that lets my sync PocketPC Contacts <-> Address Book, Calendar <-> iCal etc. I guess the Newton II rumors (for the past year) finally wore me down enough

Built In Bluetooth Allows Wake From Sleep
Quote:
I hope that what Apples means by "...including enhancements to wake from sleep" is that my Bluetooth mouse will stop creating a kernel panic when it wakes my computer from sleep (happens 1 out of every 20 times or so).

Internal Bluetooth on AluBook
The "Wake from Sleep" option is also disabled for me as the above image shows.
Any idea why? I think it may be because it is a notebook, so it doesn't power much of anything (mostly just memory) when in sleep. A desktop may maintain power to the bluetooth interface, etc. That, or maybe the bluetooth interface just doesn't support this on the PB. It'd be nice if Apple had a note somewhere about this, but I looked on their pages and didn't see anything to that effect. rlw: What machine are you using? -Spyky |

What sort of settings have you done to get it working? Did you just update it through the software update, reboot, and were you able to tick from there???
