Server Set up help

Hey guys, this is going to be a loaded request, so I thank you for your help in advance.

Here is what I want to do, this is for necessity, as well as curiosity. I will need as much help in a step by step kind of way as possible, as I am new to this.

Set up: I have a unlimited Server license
A G4 iMac (the server)
3 macbooks
1 Macpro
3 iMacs
2 iPhones
3 Printers

What I want to be able to do:
1. Log into my user accounts from any computer (I mean home directory here, so open directory)

2. 3 user accounts, and one guest account. Only need one workgroup.

3. Each of the 3 notebooks to have a mobile home directory tied to one of the 3 home directories.

4. iChat Server

5. iCal server so that we can coordinate.

6. Web Server.

7. VPN. We dont have a static IP, but would love to be able to get into this from outside the estate.

8. Time Machine server. I have a 500 GB NAS

9. Possible Exchange support to use with the iphone

Thanks in advance, I know that this is alot, but I need all the help I can get

Sounds like a tall order to instruct on all those services in one post.

You should look at http://www.lynda.com

You can watch videos of how to set up all the services on mac server plus a load of other applications

Watch it, seriously. It's very good, and you can walk through setting up your server along side the videos.

You can sign up for a seven day trial, enough to watch through all the Server videos and more ;)


Again: watch and you will understand. Oh, and without a static IP, you're going to have problems. Leopard, in fact any server, Windows, Linux or Mac, dislikes dynamic IPs.

Edit: and Exchange support. Hmm. Can't you just please yourself with IMAP?

Yeah, I was thinking about getting a lynda subscription for this purpose.

and possibly a static IP.

as for the Exchange, I was looking at it more so that I could get calendar appointments pushed to the phone, but I might try to create an iphone app that will sync with dotMac, just an idea.

Look at Z-Push for Exchange. It's an open source ActiveSync implementation for push services to mobile devices.

The Lynda videos are more than worth the subscription price, but with a free trial, they're even better value ;)

You will need a static IP if you want to do anything outwith your own LAN.

I've got this book, it's also quite good for reference.

Let Me partially change the nature of my question to get one main thing figured out.

How can I set up Networked Home Directories and Portable Home Directories

well i won't be much help, though i've tried to do these things myself, with not much luck. i look forwarding to watching this thread, so maybe i will learn more myself
