VLC Player for Windows....

Anyone know how i can get surround sound with vlc player. My PC is connected via optical to my theater receiver, but when i choose SPDIF in the drop down menu for audio, it just stutters and keeps on like that. When i choose 5.1, i just get stereo, minus the audio for the center and rear speakers. Anyone know how to fix the digital part. it is almost like the computer is trying to decode it as well as the receiver.

Actually, this problem applies to both the mac and pc. How to get the digital audio to my receiver.
 
Now i got it to output without studdering/distortion, but i still only get left and right channels. my receiver lights up saying that it is decoding dolby, and shows that all 5.1 channels are being used, but it only outputs the left and right speakers.
