Is there anyway I can hack the finder to let me change the grid spacing? I have smaller icons in certain folders, and having that large of grid spacing is rediculous. Putting the text on the side helps sometimes, but I like my text under my icons better.

Any ideas?

Try making the text size smaller. I think the OS reserves a certain amount of space for the icon and name, which controls the size of the grid. On my Macs with smaller screens, I set the text size to 11 pt vice 12 pt.
