very slow internet speed= virus?

Hello everyone,

Very recently my internet connection has slowed down very drastically when changing pages, using either Firefox or Safari.

I am wondering why it is running so slow on the net, any help would be greatly appreciated.

My isp seems to be working ok- 1 user is experiencing fast(normal) internet, one using wireless is usual as well. Me and another seems to be slowed down. (they are all windows).

my comp- G5 dual 2.7power pc, 2.5 g ram, osx10.4.11.

I have completed a ping test;
ping has started ...

I think this proves the cables are working?

please can anyone help, I'm not sure what to do and getting very frustrated, cheers.

slow internet

Create a new user profile then logon as the new user. Is the internet still slow?

If it is slow then some of your preferences in the other profile are corrupted, if it isn't slow then there is another problem.

In a Hell predominately of my own making
I would think the obvious answer is that the available bandwidth is getting chewed up by others. What type of connection to the internet do you have, who's your provider, what locale are you connecting from?

I wouldn't over-complicate something that likely has a very simple answer (and the info you posted seems perfectly fine), and I certainly wouldn't assume a virus.

I had the same problem a while back and it turned out that my DNS settings were messed up. Pinging was fine but surfing the web was very slow. Hope this helps.

When my internet slows, I unplug the power from my wireless router for a few seconds, plug it back in and push the reset button (Belkin wireless G) and all is good.

In some routers the use of DNS relay can cause slowdowns.
There's a bug in the firmware that is used by several router
manufacturers.

thanks for the replies guys. I think It is something wrong with the dns server. I changed to the bt server address and it seems to be working alot better. I think our router is messed up. Joe

One other thing to consider. If you are connecting to your ISP via DHCP, then sometimes a reset/refresh of your DHCP connection can speed things up a bit.
