New 3G Strings in iPhone SDK Beta 6

I addition to the earlier string giving user a method to turn on and off 3G ("Using 3G loads data faster, but decreases battery life."), Apple has added two warning strings if a user tries to turn 3G on or off during an active phone call:

- "Disabling 3G will end your phone call. Are you sure you want to disable 3G?"
- "Enabling 3G will end your phone call. Are you sure you want to enable 3G?"

Apple appears to be fine tuning the 3G experience on the upcoming 3G-capable iPhone.

I'm getting really anxious now... the 3G iPhone is close.. so I'm guessing the 3G iPhone will ship with 2.0 software

Which either means we'll have to wait till the end of june for iPhone 2, or software 2.0 will be released early. I hope its the latter.

Wonder if 3G will enhance the quality of the call. If not, then turning it off for phone calls makes a lot of sense.

Hooray for a new era of half-truths!

"Did you hang up on me last night?"

"No, baby, I just turned off the 3G on my iPhone!"

Does 3G have anything to do with the call quality? I wasn't aware? That would be interesting.

Works for me......... merely claiming a loss or dropped signal was getting old.

Or, as they are updating 1.1.5 they are doing code merge to ensure 2.0 is built on the latest code base and being tested.

Remember that 3G supports simultaneous voice and data (just like how Jobs was surfing on Wi-Fi and talking on the phone), whereas EDGE is one or the other. So, it makes sense that switching modes could have to reset the communication.

I would think it has to bounce the H/W or something because as with current 3G you can be talking on the phone and then switch to Edge and it doesn't impact the call.

He was just so excited about this story. The mistake is a simple one and not a big deal. You don't have to be so attacking, especially when that mistake was already brought up.

I thought someone would've asked this already, but...

Why would someone want to fiddle with their 3G being on/off in the middle of a phone call?

I don't think that anybody would do it ever. Maybe just for kicks of if they're bored. Apple just put this in there in the event that somebody is about to win $5 million if he gives the right answer over the phone and he knows the right answer and is about to say it, but, with all of the excitement flips the 3G button and hangs up, thereby losing the $5 million because somebody else calls in and provides the correct answer. That person would probably sue Apple because he was not informed of the ramifications that flipping the switch would have on his life. So, by providing this notice, any idiot will know that flipping the switch will hang up the call, and Apple will not be sued because the idiot received a warning. I can't think of another scenario.

Dont quote me on it, but I did read somewhere that it does increase the quality of calls. Something to do with the bandwidth it supplies, which enables it to double the rate of transfer hence upping the quality.

I know that sounds pretty woolie but I cant find where I read that now and thats the best I could remember!!!

3g is a data connection so it doesn't give you better call quality. When you switch 3g on/off it does reset the phones connection to the network, so this thread rumor is true, and for me is nothing new, just par for the course with 3g.

What i find a bit strange is that for me to turn off 3g on my SEw880 its squirilled away in the menu, so i cant see why you'd be in there during a call.......unless is just covering itself from people complaining about dropped calls.......or the 3g on/off is going to be put somewhere very accessable?

Oh well, how many days is it now!

We all know it's coming. Apple knows we all know it's coming. So it's no suprise that they are not too fussed about the odd 3G reference or two in the SDK. They know sites like us will feast on any bit of info we get, further fuelling excitement and rumour. It's not like we're going to be cannibilising sales of the existing iPhone

I wonder if they can deliver on the expectations. I'm not sure whether to buy my shares in Apple now or wait until June 10th in case they dive...
