No Sales Tax on Phone Orders?

I've tried Googling my question, but I can't seem to get a definitive answer.

Does Apple charge sales tax for phone orders?

I recently bought AppleCare over the phone and I swear the Apple rep quoted me a price with sales tax added. I paid with credit card and I was looking at my bill and noticed it was the base price with no sales tax.

If it makes a difference, I bought it as a student (so I got the educational discount), and I live in California.

I'm not complaining, of course, just wondering what actually led to me not getting charged sales tax:

1. Educational purchase? (but I've bought stuff as an educational purchase before and got taxed)
2. Phone order? (but Apple rep quoted tax)
3. No tax on AppleCare? (but there's tax when I try to buy it online)
4. Mistake on Apple or my credit card company's part? (unlikely)

Yes, you'll pay sales tax with ANY order from Apple regardless of how
you place the order. The determining factor on sales tax is whether the
entity has a physical presence (store, warehouse or offices) within
your state.

Amazon or a few popular Apple resellers (like Macmall) and you can avoid
the tax, but may have shipping costs whereas Apple ships for free. But
you can't order a custom configuration from Amazon either.

AppleCare is a form of insurance and depending on your state may not be subject to sales tax. This may vary as some states may classify it as a service.

In Florida, Apple ran afoul of the state insurance commisioner's office and could not sell AppleCare here for awhile until they registered as an insurance broker.

As far as the Apple store showing estimated tax on AppleCare, it may just be the way the cart is set up.

Can anyone confirm that they were charged tax on a completed order?

Just bought AppleCare for a MacBook Pro and an iPod Shuffle last week. I paid $4.66 on sales tax, which appears to be consistent with it only having been calculated from the shuffle's price of $69.

Then whoever was putting in my order over the phone must have made a mistake. My credit card was charged only $183 for a Macbook Applecare, which is the educational discount price.

Tax here in California would be 8.25%, or ~$15.

Mind if I ask where you live? I'm from California--maybe California doesn't allow tax to be charged on warranties?
