Time Machine causing Kernel Panic

Time Machine was doing its normal hourly backup when all of a sudden I got the multi-language gray shade of death. I restarted and tried to backup again, which resulted in another kernel panic. This time I tried entering Time Machine, and in the middle of "Connecting to Backup Volume," I get another kernel panic. This has never happened before I updated to 10.5.3, but I've had several backups since updating and this hasn't happened before just now, so I'm not sure it's a 10.5.3 issue.

I have Time Machine pointed at a Time Capsule and I'm on the MacBook listed in my signature. I turned off Time Machine until I can figure this out. Any ideas out there?
 
I'm having the same problem.

After battling this all day, I think I have the same problem, and the only solution I have so far is to turn off time machine as well. I'm waiting to see if this will keep my machine going for now.

After turning off Time Machine, I haven't had anything freeze in the last 23 hours my MacBook's been on. Looks like the same problem to me, too. Let's hope there's a fix soon... :confused:
 
Anyone have any ideas on this? I don't like having to turn off Time Machine to keep my computer stable.
 
Yep, same problem here too. Have turned time machine off and panic has not returned. If I try a manual backup or turn TM on... Panic! Mr Mainwaring
 
I have reported to Apple every time it's happened.

I think I might have figured out the source of the problem, which it turned out is pretty simple, but it's not pretty.

I tried to verify my Time Machine disk image, and Disk Utility came up with all kinds of errors. I tried to repair the disk, but the repair failed. I tried repairing it again, and it failed. Has the image simply because corrupt beyond repair? I don't want to have to do the initial backup all over again and lose all my previous backups...

Whoever has this problem, try repairing the disk image, and report back?
 
^^ If disk utility can't repair the errors, then you should reformat and try again, though its possible/probable that its a hardware error.
 
Kernel Panic

Did anyone find a solution for this problem?

I can't use my TimeCapsule, always kernel panic when trying to back up.
 
Solution

I was able to solve the problem (at least for me) running Disk Utility and repairing the local filesystem permissions and later on running the 'Verify Disk'.

As it seems it looked to be some inconsistency in my own file system that triggered the kernel panic.

IMHO, it's still a bug in the kernel since it should never panic, but at least we have a way to avoid it.

Hope that helps other people.
 
Yup, same here.

Haven't had a single panic (MBP user since 2006) until the "updates" for Java and Time Machine rolled out last week. I'm on a 17" MBP 2.8 with 8 gig.

Since then, anytime my time machine tries to back up, it will panic. Sometimes it will make it further into the backup than others. I've been to the apple store twice, suspecting bad memory... but after a two hour memory test finding good ram, it was deduced that it was a software issue.

I've since re-installed, re-formatted, archived and installed, and spent way more hours than anyone should.

The kernel panics showed launchd, backupd, mdworker, and kernel_task for all of the panics. And yes, I've had more than 4 in just the last 2 days. I hope they come up with a fix for this soon, I got rid of my pc to avoid stuff like this.

The best workaround I could come up with is to turn off time machine, which I am not a fan of. I'll keep you guys posted if I find something better.
 
Panic With TIme Machine

I like all of you experienced exactly this, but now i have fixed it.

Turn off time machine
Then run a disk repair on the time machine Drive, (Takes a long time if you connect with Wifi)

It will find an error on disk structure of the time machine. after it is repaired, re-start time machine and the backups seems to work again.

I have not had an issue since doing this
