I'm a new Mac user... I've started importing some footage into an iMovie project, but when I try to launch iMovie subsequently, it always bounces in the Dock without launching... or it crashes upon launch (Crash Report Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERN PROTECTION FAILURE). Eventually if I keep trying to launch, it will work. But why is it so unstable?

Need a little more info, what Mac do you have, what version of X are you running and what version of iMovie are you using.

It almost seems like you are having a kernal panic. Try running Norton System works on it that can help. You might even have a bad MLB.
