3G iPhone Hardware Supports Tri-band HSDPA and GPS?

Engadget claims to have heard from a "reliable source" that a private version of the 3G iPhone's firmware has been dissected revealing the following hardware support:
Quote:
- Infineon PMB6952 / S-GOLD3 six-band UMTS / HSDPA transceiver
- Murata LMRX3JCA-479 tri-band amplifier (we're assuming for the 3G)
- Sony SP9T - antenna Switch for GSM / UMTS dual mode
- ARM 1176JZF-S - Main CPU (same as in 1st gen iPhone)
- Skyworks 77427 - UMTS / HSDPA tx 1900, rx 2100MHz
- Skyworks 77414 - UMTS / HSDPA 1900
- Skyworks 77413 - UMTS / HSDPA 850MHz
- Internal build model number: n82ap (1st gen iPhone was model m68ap)
- UMTS Power Saving - on or off
- Hooks for Global Locate Library (GLL), software that handles GPS related commands for the host processor
Engadget suggests that this is evidence for GPS support as well as Tri-band HSDPA (3G) support making it compatible with international carriers. GigaOM had previously "confirmed" GPS support was present with the contract going to Broadcom. If true, the specs also reveal the main processor for the next iPhone would be the same as the existing iPhone.

The 3G-capable iPhone is expected to be announced during Apple's WWDC keynote speech on Monday, June 9th at 10am Pacific.

I doubt it.. Why on earth would the iphone need to be more powerful? That would just eat the batteries. It already runs rings around the PSP and pretty much every handheld device on the market. The CPU is already great.

Also nice to know the people who're making games already are working on the same basic spec as the 2nd generation.

What makes you say that?
Or am I missing something?

Every 3G phone available here seems to have video conferencing (NEVER used).

Oh, and mobile TV stations (sometimes used).

So true, we don't need the extra confusion of apps needing some specific iPhone model. All the apps will have to work on all models and hanging on to the original hardware is the best and cheapest way to do this.

If you are confused by Apple having different models please don't force the idea of never seeing an iPhone update onto the rest of us. I fully expect Apple to have different models available in the future, WITH DIFFERENT FEATURES, some of those phones will likely have faster processors and yes even more RAM.

Your post is really the expression of LUDDITE thinking.

Same processor, but they won't cap the speeds at less than half its actual power?

The iPhone processor is underclocked at the moment.

Not to beat a dead horse here but I will repeat as it seems to be an issue, that particular core from ARM can be implemented in any number of ways by a large number of manufactures. The actual chip could be a higher integration device, could be faster and it could be lower power.

At this point it could be anything and is not worth speculating about since WWDC is only a couple of days away. I'm as interested as anybody to find out what the actual chipset is, but frankly I'm not to worried about power right now. IPhone is already pretty impressive as is, I will take faster of course but won't worry to much about it.

ARM is in the business of selling cores to a number of manufactures. They take these cores add a bit of peripheral tech and them sell them to companies like Apple. So just because there is indication of a specific core one can not take from that that the processor is in fact the same. Frankly I'd expect Apple to have a much higher integration device in the next cell phone revision, both to save power and to save space.

In any event the processor could be the same one SAMSUNG now sells to Apple or any of hundreds of other designs that use the same core. It is one of ARMs greatest advantages, that is the huge number of implementations available to companies to implement in products.

In the case fo the current iPhone that processor is running slower than it can to save power. They could easily give the new iPhone a speed boost just by upping clock frequency.

Thanks
Dave

The iPhone doesn't need to be more powerful. I don't see much of a point.

Let's say the new iPhone comes out and it's 40% faster. Developers will still have to target applications to run on the old iPhone too, so nothing will max out that extra 40% without dropping support for the old iPhone, and the dev would lose too much money cutting out half of their market base.

No, let's save the battery power and just put a lower powered CPU at the same speed, or put the same CPU.

I completely disagree. I think the iPhone needs to be more powerful. It is awesome how it is, but it still has trouble sometimes opening up programs. There are times when text messaging (even after I cleared all the text messages) will take a 3-5 seconds to open up; may not seem like much, but it is very annoying. This is even when I don't have my iPhone memory filled all up more than 3/4ths the way. This has also been constant with the 3 iPhones I have had.

Verizon capable phones?

Does any of this mean that the iPhone will be supported on the Verizon network?

Looks like a world-wide launch! What's the record in sales of any device/movie/game over a week or weekend?

I'm sure Apple would love to get that top spot.

Yes, Im sure they would but, I wouldn't count on it...

GTAIV - 3.6 million in 1 day... A tuesday at that... and it wasn't $400... and no $60 monthly contract.

How many did the 1st iPhone sell in the first day?

If the iPhone has GPS, and if someone writes a good GPS app for it (allowing it to be used on the dashboard of my car), I will buy that app, and the iPhone, in a heartbeat. I hope this rumor's true!

I currently have an iPod touch and a phone, but want a GPS... if I could have 3 in one, I'd be in heaven (figuratively).
