I bought an iPod touch on June 3rd from the Apple.com online store. It took a day to process, and then was shipped off from CHINA?
Why would it start from China? I mean, I know it's made there, but wouldn't it be cheaper to have thousands sent over on a ship (or plane) from China then distributed from various warehouses in the US than to have them shipped individually from China? Then it comes to Alaska! Yay, my iPod has already been exposed to temperatures below 40 and it's just getting tossed around by some pricks bundled up in 6 layers of clothing. Then it gets more interesting. It goes from Alaska to Indiana, which is about 500 miles from my home in Pennsylvania (where it needs to be sent) then it, for whatever reason, it's sent BACKWARDS across the US to Memphis, Tennessee which is more like 1000 miles away. After Departing Memphis almost 24 hours ago, there's been absolutely no updates to it's whereabouts. WTF FedEX?! You could have had it here by Friday, but apparently it's more efficient to send things back across the US and then truck it here again at $4.06 a gallon. Good job.
I guess I've learned my lesson: ALWAYS choose the 3-day shipping option if you don't want to wait forever. Anyone else experienced such stupidity from FedEx?

[snip]

Anyone else experienced such stupidity from FedEx?

I live in central PA, and I recently ordered something from the online Apple Store that went from near Harrisburg, PA to Trenton, NJ, to Pittsburgh, PA, and finally to State College, PA to be sent out for delivery.

Harrisburg to Trenton: 127.5 miles
Trenton to Pittsburgh: 325.5 miles
Pittsburgh to State College: 136.5 miles

Total: 589.5 miles

Harrisburg to State College: 87.8 miles

Definitely seems convoluted to me!

Well I doubt the plane is empty. They're bringing a bunch of other products what difference does it make? The reason they bring it all over the place is because demand is higher in certain locations so why should they ship it straight to you and have a truck or plane that's half empty. They're probably saving fuel if anything.

Ok I know Alaska is cold but it's June it's not below 40 all the time there and the plane is heated.

I realize you being upset about how long it's taking but your other arguments are kinda over the top.

It's always funny hearing people complain about FedEx because they always assume that a) FedEx is only delivering YOUR products and b) they don't realize nearly all orders go to seemingly odd locations, as that's usually where distribution centers are.

Node to node. More efficient. Look up supply chain management. Works for shippers too. An empty vessel is a costly vessel.

s fedex retarded? Do you really need to ask?

The fedex guy remembered me working at an office, two year ago, so he delivered the package overthere, was a bit easier!!!
they got mad when I phoned them to ask where my mbp was, because I didnt get it. The would try to sell me the autograph stating an Iranian name as being mine. After much talking they found out they had delivered it at my old workplace and wanted me to drive the 45miles to correct their mistake. I told them to get it and deliver it to me before anyone there would open the parcel and nick the mbp 17" hi-res!!!
man i was angry.
first they deliver packages on the wrong address, then tell me I did get, told me to go and get it myself and worst part was when they delivered the thing at half past one. IN THE NIGHT, by special delivery.
I like the extra efford, but in the middle of the night? Guy got toasted by my neighbour as well because he'd rung the wrong doorbell.

Other package didnt get delivered first day, guy tells me they did ring, i told them i was sitting in the front yard, so it would have been hard missing the feller. Anyway, I make an appoi tment to pickup the parcel the next day, early, at the distribution centre, but when I get there, no bloody parcel.
The note was written on the parcel NOT to deliver, it was put on a special shelf, but the driver had gone in the office, nicked the parcel and you can guess it, i could find a note in my letter box that i wasnt home when he was at my door.
So short? Are they retarded? Well, at least some are definetly.

No they really aren't retarded. It is your lack of understanding. All most all airfreight clears customs in Anchorage. Especially if it is FedEx. Then, depending on what flights are available, it gets sent to the lower 48. Just as UPS has a hub in KY, FedEx's main hub is in Memphis (did you see Cast Away?). Anyway, this is a perfectly normal routing for your product. Anyway who the f cares how it gets to you as long as it gets to you in a reasonable amount of time.

Also, it is probably starting to warm up in AK now so I doubt people are up there in "6 layers of clothes".

CHILLL.... at this rate you will be dead of high blood pressure by the time you are 40.

FedEx is definitely retarded.
I realize MY iPod is not the only thing being sent, I know I'm not more important than anyone else, or any outrageous claims like that, but it seems like there would be a vessel that goes at least slightly more north-eastern than from Indiana to Tennessee. The latest update to confirm complete retardation is:
Jun 8, 2008 9:37 AM Arrived at FedEx location MEMPHIS, TN
Jun 7, 2008 4:17 PM Departed FedEx location MEMPHIS, TN
11:06 AM Arrived at FedEx location MEMPHIS, TN

So basically, it was put on a FedEx truck at the Memphis node, drove around Memphis for 17 hours, and then went back to the Memphis node. How is that logical? Someone explain this one to me? Because I'm obviously just being a douche in not understanding any of this.

--Edit
In addition, the only reason I'm freaking out about this is because I'm leaving for a week on Wednesday and 1) I NEED the iPod by then and I need time to load my music on it. 2) I haven't had an iPod since I broke my 60gig last week. - do you know what it's like to have an iPod permanently attached to your ear for 2 years and then go for a week and a half with nothing but small-town hick radio stations that play only country music?! It's enough to make a person ill.

it has to do with the way fedex runs their business. anything mailed through fedex must go to their hub before being delivered. this being said, if i wanted to fedex something to my next door neighbor, there's a good possibility that the package will go to another state before coming back and being delivered.

If you needed something so time sensitive, why not just buy it in a store or pay for expedited shipping? Even typical "standard shipping" from any retailer says to expect 5-7 business days. Ordering on the 3rd you're pushing your luck by choosing standard shipping, no matter where you order it from. Some retailers don't ship for 24-48 hours after you place the order (Apple is within 24 hours). I wouldn't blame FedEx here for you not doing the math. You can't assume they would ship from an East Coast warehouse. Even ground from California can take over 5 business days.

You'll get it by the promised date. Just because you don't like the way that they manage their logistics doesn't make them retarded. Having worked in airline and cargo logistics for so long, I can tell you that they have a very efficient system. If you needed it faster, you should have paid more.

FedEx is just moving the box from Apple to you. There's absolutely no reason why they should be the ones that maintain warehouses for iPods... You're getting what you paid for. Don't complain until they fail to meet their longest estimation.

lol. okay, there's no need to treat me like a retard. I realize at this point I should have got the expedited shipping option. And I bought it online because I had a $100 off Apple Online Store coupon. I bought it as soon as I could. I'm a college student so it's not as though I can just pull $450 out of my ass. I know it's no FedEx's fault that Apple has poor warehouse placement, however it IS FedEx's fault that it went to Memphis, then left for 17 hours and then went back again. You cannot tell me and expect me to believe that it's more efficient to send my package 500 miles in the opposite direction. There had to have been a shipment of packages going east from Indianapolis. NYC is east, mind you, which I assume probably goes through Trenton, NJ. I've had many packages through Trenton.
Like I said, I've learned my lesson: ALWAYS use expedited shipping if you don't wanna wait forever. I just hate waiting for things and then seeing it sent the opposite direction of me.

It's not their "fault" for doing any of that. It's how the system works. IND is the hub for western North America, Memphis covers the eastern continent and is also the international hub. ANC-IND-MEM-wherever is the most common routing of packages from China to the east coast. If you have ideas about how FedEx should more properly run their logistics department, I'm sure they'd love to laugh at them. Believe it or not, their system is efficient and your box's routing is perfectly justified.

Man, I am really, really glad that you don't work for FedEx. You really think your order is the only one coming from CHINA? Christ man, I'm sure they have things figured out quite a bit better than you do.

Wow....

Riiight. Life sounds real tough, man.

Wow, maybe if you actually read my post you would know I'm not being self-centered. Holy s%!$. Why does everyone assume I'm a self-centered, immature, instant-gratification, always-get-my-way little bastard?!

I originally posted not to be criticized but rather more of a comical thing. I was just curious if OTHERS have had this happen to them because this is the first package I've ever had shipped that went through a dozen nodes before even being close to delivery. But I forgot that I live in America where NO ONE CAN TAKE A JOKE anymore. Wow. F*** this country. Lighten up people! Not everything is a terroristic threat and it's not Red Alert day anymore, so calm the hell down.
If you don't have anything funny to say, then don't say it. I have enough bitchy people nagging me, I don't need yours too.
If you agree and think that it AT LEAST seems silly to send something backwards across the country, then say so. If you're just gonna give me a line of BS about "oh, you're young and you want the world on a silver platter" then kindly shove it and keep your text to yourself. Quit wasting my neighbors bandwidth, since I am after all tapping into the internet from my neighbors non-secured wireless right now. =]

Because you wrote this immature post?

I've had stuff delivered to me through Fed Ex, UPS, and USPS. Fed Ex has always been the slowest with UPS being the fastest. Oh and don't even get me started on DHL. They delivered to the wrong address twice. Fed Ex might be a little bit slower but they are more efficient at least in my case. The reason Fed Ex ships through cities like Memphis and Indianapolis even if it might be backwards from your destination is because they are distribution centers which actually makes it cheaper in the end.

Well, that post would tell you why people think of you like that.

Immature how? I'm merely pointing out that companies like FedEx constantly bitch about losing profits and rising gas prices and then they haul packages in the opposite direction of where they need to go.
lilj4425 sets an example. He is right, FedEx IS SLOW, that's my point - because they send packages all over Hell's Half Acre instead of the shortest path. I guess I'm immature for using LOGIC which apparently very few of you are using.
So, yes, continue your contest to see who can pretend they know anything about the inner workings of FedEx and I'll continue to use logic and say that they're not doing the most cost- and time-effective methods.

Yes, they are slow but more efficient at least in my case. Others might have it different. They don't ship to the wrong address unlike DHL. That's the company I have problems with. I told you why they send packages all over hell's half acre. They are distribution centers. Planes have to be full to cut back on costs. Actually, you're not using logic. Think before you speak next time.

There's a huge distribution center in Trenton, NJ which is far closer than Memphis, TN. Most of the North-eastern destined packages are sent through there. Still, illogical to go to Memphis, thanks.

Aren't you? Usually when people lash out like this we hit a nerve. :p

Oh, and I did read all the RED text in this thread, though I skipped the black. ;)
