Extending the life of an iMac screen?

Is there any way to remove the screen of a 17 inch imac once the body had become obsolete, and hook up the screen to a newer computer? I know it's a longshot but it seems quite a waste if your computers brain dies and you have to throw out the screen too. So is there physically a way to do it or is it impossible? Thanks.
 
Maybe if you are good with a soldering iron. You could try selling the display on eBay and leave it at that.
