Oh crap! Tried to use ThemeChanger in Panther!

I used foolishly used ThemeChanger in Panther, and while my theme looks better than ever in most of my apps, Finder now refuses to run!😱

I'm scared to restart my computer, as I don't know if it can turn on without Finder. Does anyone know of a way to solve this problem? Maybe a Panther compatible theme might help?

Well, at least I'm learning how to use the UNIX terminal.🙄

Does anyone know the UNIX command to display the contents of a folder?
 
ls lists the contents of a directory (if you're using the UNIX side of OS X, you might as well use the right words 😉)
 
Well, I've already humiliated myself a lot by doing what is probably the stupidest thing in the history of MacRumors, but I might as well ask these questions as I know almost nothing about UNIX.

1. What's the command to open a file that has a space in it's name?

2. And what's the command to move a file off of a disk image into a folder on my computer?

I know the second question seems foolish, but I have downloaded a Panther theme, which will hopefully counteract the Jaguar theme and return my computer to normal.

An Applescript for these would also be helpful.🙁

I have no idea what ThemeChanger is, but to answer your 2 questions:

1. Put single (right) quote around filename like this: 'Final Cut Pro.app'

2. You can use 'cp' to copy a file.
 
mv takes care of moving. And sometimes putting a backslash (\) in front of the space works, but not always.
 
ThemeChanger is a program that installs themes on your computer. I had made a theme for Jaguar, and I attempted to install it in Panther.

Thanks for the UNIX commands, but I still have one question. When I open a .dmg file, the opened disk is not listed in the desktop directory From what I noticed when using OS X, it has always been on the same level as the hard drive. How would I access this level/directory? Thanks to everyone who has helped so far.
 
From your home directory, type:

cd ../../Volumes
ls


You should find all of your hard drives plus the mounted image.
 
Thanks to everyone who helped. Well, all of my ideas failed, and Finder still won't open. Luckily, I now know enough UNIX to survive until I find my Panther disks. I'm still open to any suggestions.

just trying to live'n things up around here.

still, he's OS theme change was a pretty asinine thing to do so i thought it would warrant an asinine comment.

oh well, i think everyone around here forgot how to laugh.

if you have OS9 you can boot off that and do it from there.

im not too confident with my UNIX knowledge 😉

I've now learned enough UNIX to navigate through my hard drive. Where would I find the files to delete?
 
It depends on whether the theme only modifies your user's settings or the global settings for the machine.

Try deleting this:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
 
The theme affected all users, so I guess it would be Global. The deleting of the Finder preferences didn't seem to have any affect.
 
ThemeChanger will work on Panther, but here's what you have to do to make it so:

Open ThemeChanger, then go to File->Remove Aqua Backup. Now quit ThemeChanger. Open Themechanger again, and it will prompt you to select an Aqua backup. Select Max's 10.3 Aqua Restore theme and then you're good to go 🙂

Thank you so much! Well, it's been fun, and I finally learned how to use UNIX, even if it wasn't the exactly way I wanted to.🙄
