those white iPhone with the speaker holes leaked images that seem to be accurate (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/497082/) show additional sensors and what appears to be a small camera. if these images are correct, maybe apple is delaying the announcement of video conferencing and other sensors like how they announced YouTube a few weeks before the original iPhone launch. who knows.

I just made two posts stating basically the same thing.

Maybe by replying to yours, more people will see the idea.

The leaked case specs stating tapered edges and the new circular speaker holes were both accurate. Those case specs also included a third sensor. Was that one part just randomly inaccurate, or are they delaying an announcement until closer to launch like they did with YouTube and the glass screen last time?

that would kind of be genius... apple knows we obsess over products and that we always find the worst to talk about first, so it would be cool to release some of the specs with the at&t news let that die down a bit and then right before launch announce a few really cool new features that will make everyone so excited they'll forget about all the bad things and finally focus on the good!

As crazy as this sounds, it does make sense. Was I not the only one to notice how long they took to show a picture of the FRONT of the new phone? It was like they were teasing us and we were all waiting to see if there was a camera on the front.

I think it would be FIERCE if they did in fact manage to hide the video camera... And since they are releasing iphone around the world, it makes sense! Video phone features never took off in the USA, but they are HUGE in Japan and Asia!

except people did get some hands on time and no one noticed a front facing camera... so im starting to doubt it

if there was a front view camera. and you can do video chat.....

att would charge you 40/month because they are greedy bastards.

Well, the FCC documents for the iPhone 3G are out. Do you see any specifics? They would have to be mentioned, otherwise it's just a pipe dream.

Those holes in the headset speaker are just for... the speaker. Anyone who has taken apart a phone knows that there is mesh covering it.;)

I will look over them now.
However, I don't believe that a camera would have to be reported in an FCC document, as it's not transmitting any radio frequency. Any "video chat" would be done over the 3G or WiFi chip that the FCC already approved.

EDIT: The FCC filling DOES include the following statement:

"Apple requests that the Commission withhold the following documents from public viewing for forty-five days after the date certification is granted:

- Exhibit 1: Test Setup Photographs
- Exhibit 2: External Photographs
- Exhibit 9: User Manual

Although Apple has begun to market the device publicly, these documents reveal technical and design information that has not been publicly disclose in such marketing... Apple believes the period of confidentiality requested is necessary to protect the information until the commercial release of the device."

EDIT 2: Upon full analysis of the FCC document, I see no direct reference to a front-facing camera. However, there also does not appear to be any direct reference to a proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, or accelerometer. The only reference to the back camera is a circle on a drawing of the back of the iPhone.

I think it MIGHT be plausible.

I would love for this to be true, and i am fully behind this, but i don't think it will happen.

I don't think it will happen either, but I was the first to come up with the idea (as far as I know) earlier this afternoon, and I'd love to turn out to be right. :)

The more I research, I can't find anything to clearly debunk it, though of course it is rampant speculation. Read through the edits on my above post about the FCC filing if you haven't yet.

With all the Sarbanes-Oxley type business laws in effect, companies really aren't allowed to play these types of games. Adding 'secret' features causes problems for revenue recognition. I'm not sure if the rules apply here because the iphone hasn't actually gone on sale yet, but it doesn't make sense for Apple to hold back info on features, especially when today was the big worldwide press day. Why would you hold back something like this?

They did a year ago.

The iPhone was announced in January. It wasn't until the middle part of June (WWDC maybe?) that the YouTube app was unveiled, and the screen was "upgraded" from plastic to optical quality glass.

I think it is something that apple would do. I have high hopes that they will announce this in a couple of weeks. If not, oh well, im still going to upgrade.

Exactly where I stand right now. Did anybody else find it a little odd when they showed a close-up of the camera on the new iPhone, Steve paused for a moment, and seemed to reluctantly kind of mutter, "Camera..."

There were definitely hands-on experiences by Gizmodo, Engadget and others. However, there's no reason Apple could have fabricated a few special demo units.

But it does look unlikely.

Also, there's nothing to prevent the camera from being behind the glass, but there's no indication of a front facing camera in the ad either.

I think that had more to do with the fact that he didn't want the crowd to react to a non-upgraded 2MP camera. Apple.com lists the iPhone as a 2MP camera. Gizmodo took some photos and didn't see any improvement in the camera.
