Soundtrack

Has there been any more information about a possible "Soundtrack Lite" to be included with an updated iLife in January??

I wish Soundtrack wasn't so expensive. I'd love a nice, cheap recording app.

You wish it wasn't so expensive, becauase it is cheap? I don't know just struck me as weird. I have always wanted to try Soundtrack. See what it is like. And to the other person who said this isn't news or a rumor. It is news, and it is bigger news, which macrumors seems to be catoring too.

Has anyone tried it yet? I'm wondering if it's a release ready for, well, release. You know, after the whole Quicktime/10.2.8 mishaps...

Soundtrack is not a recording app. It's a loop based music composing, for lack of a better term, app.

TomSmithMacEd, Fargo eh? Enough said... Thanks for the laughs. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the grammar Tenacious B used.

"I wish Soundtrack wasn't so expensive. I'd love a nice, cheap recording app"

yup makes sense to me. He wishes that app was cheaper because he would like to have a GOOD cheap app.

And what is this about...

Works great

I'm installing the update now - Soundtrack is a great (and very finished-feeling) app, though it's pupose is a little limited. Unlike Deck, Peak, or Reason, all of which can be used for way more things than the box claims, Soundtrack is a fairly specific app when it comes to purpose - it is a looping utility, similar to Acid in that respect, and it is designed to sync these loops with video tracks, to create Movie Soundtracks.

But even if you aren't working on a movie, it's lots of fun to put together mini-tracks...

Huh? Soundtrack is already the lite equivalent of an iApp and cheap to buy also. If you wanted a professional version of Soundtrack then you would purchase Emagic Logic.

I really don't think Soundtrack could be reduced in features to make an iApp.

Soundtrack isn't for recording, it's for assembling music in a quick tempo synced fashion.

This one is a freebie from TC Works:
TC Works Spark ME

It's a great app which there is a pro version called Spark XL also if you need more control.

I was really hoping we'd see "Rewire" built into Soundtrack with this update. Hopefully next time. Once it's Rewire aware it will be a very useful app.

Now if soundtrack could get Re-wire support, it would be a great partner to Reason 2.5 and be able to record audio tracks syced to virtual synths etc...
i love reason but I miss the audio recording in it, oh and external midi devices....

Soundtrack is a loop based music creation app. Logic is an app for audio post production. Soundtrack is not "Logic light." Soundtrack and Logic perform 2 seperate functions.

To everyone who says Soundtrack isn't a recording app, they're partially wrong. That may not be the sole purpose of it, but I recently used it to record me singing crappily along to Christmas songs by the Jackson 5, The Swingle Singers, Roomful of Blues, etc., and then used it to perfectly sync my voice with the audio original. It worked fine, and I'm sending it as a Christmas cd with all my Christmas cards this year.

If you want to buy a recording app, Soundtrack might not be your best choice. But if you want Soundtrack's features and also would like to be able to use it as a light recording app as well, it works.

Sondtrack update

The only thing that kinda sucked about the update was the fact that it wanted my serial number again...

It knew who I was, I think that can be tedious...

I've been looking for a good music app on the mac since i just swithced.

You seem to have confirmed what I always thought was in Soundtrack. It's simply a loop-based thing like those music games you used to get on the PlayStation. Ok, so you're getting something like 5GB of royalty-free loops, but £200?

Logic is too expensive for what I want (I can't afford £200 really, let alone anything more). I have a decent little program called Magix Music Studio 7 on my PC. It is a 32 track real-time audio and midi program with virtual editing and only cost me £60. I've seen it in the shops since for £40! Why isn't there anything like that on the Mac? Bring out iMusic or iLogic for £50-60 and I'll be right in there! It would make Soundtrack look stupid I suppose.

I've downloaded Reason 2.5 demo also but I don't think it's quite what I'm looking for (just seems to be midi). And Peak Lite (demo) has a HORRIBLE interface (I hated it - not just because it was brushed metal).

Soundtrack update by itself?

Is there a way to update Soundtrack BY ITSELF? I have 1.0, and can't seem to figure out how to update ONLY SOUNDTRACK, instead of getting the FCP updater page. Thanks -JB

(NEVER MIND! I am a moron, I decided NOT to follow the Versiontracker link and do it right! LOL! Sorry all.)

I think you are underestimating the power and flexibility of Soundtrack. And instead of asking Apple "why not an iApp this, or iApp that" why don't you ask the makers of Magix Music Studio why they don't have a Mac version?

If you want more apps for the Mac you need press other companies to make them instead of Apple.

Question Can't install update!

OK, I originally tried installing the updater, and it was on a different partition, so it says it needed to be in the Applications folder. So I moved Soundtrack AND the Loop Utility to the Applications, with the same result. So I deleted all related to Soundtrack and reinstalled it into the Applications folder. Tried updating again, with same result AGAIN! What am I doing wrong? Thanks -JB

(UPDATE: WOW, you can TELL I have been sick for a few days... I repaired permissions and restarted and was able to install the update. So, if anyone else is having problems, I suggest doing the same. Thanks again!)

Considering £200 pounds is the going rate for a DVD of high quality, properly catalogued loops... basically you're buying a bunch of loops and getting a free program with them

They key phrase is "royalty free." You can easily spend thousands of dollars a year on "generic" music of questionable quality and that's what makes Soundtrack such a great program (assuming you have the time to sit down and arrange/compose your own tracks).

I understand the purpose of both apps, although it may not have been the best example I was trying to tell JohnGillilan why there would not be an iTrack or whatever the rumored name was back in the day.

Well maybe when Apple Soundtrack has some complexity then they might be able to release something like it for free without the automation.

Ableton Live is a much better application anyway. I wish it supported AU as well as VST though.

As fellow editor, I know you appreciate soundtracks usefulness.

Just today I had to do a small ident for a corporate job and I needed some music. 20 minustes in soundtrack and whola, its done. And it sounds better than any other royalty free music

(Cause it isn't generic.)

REally, soundtrack is worth the price. Sure, Apple could sell it for less minus the loops - but what would be the point?
