3rd Sensor is Another Proximity Sensor

iLounge reveals that Apple has included a second proximity sensor to the iPhone 3G to provide more accurate face-detection. This brings the total number of sensors to three (two proximity sensors, one ambient light sensor).

Apple previously included one proximity sensor near the earpiece of the original iPhone to prevent accidental key presses when the phone was held against your face. By adding a second proximity sensor, Apple is said to have improved this face-detection functionality. As a result of this addition, case manufacturers have increased the size of the opening surrounding the earpiece of the iPhone.

Details of the 3rd sensor had sparked speculation that Apple could have included a front-facing camera to enable video conferencing. No front-faced camera design, however, was announced at WWDC.

yeah i have problems with my current phone sometimes going on mute when talking on it... it seems like it doesnt like the left side of the phone.. normally it goes on mute when i have it some distance from my ear cheek at a 45 degree angle. this does make sense to put it there.

[edit: fixed reference to macworld]

No way would Steve "hide" a front facing camera and not tell us what it was, only to "surprise" us come July 11th. It would be interesting, and another reason to get one, but it's very very doubtful that there's any validity behind that.

I'm sticking with my original iPhone. What am I hoping for? Well. The revenue sharing between AT&T and Apple was quietly dropped... I'm waiting to see where this leads them. Specifically Apple to other companies. I like AT&T, but everyone under the sun I know seems to have Verizon. I really like AT&T, but really... What's keeping me there other than service contract and maybe rollover?

If only... Stupid GSM...

and that's the way the cookie crumbles...

Makes sense to have another proximity sensor though...there were numerous times my face accidentally hit the mute section of the iphone and i kept talking like a fool

Well that would be amazing if they hide the camera from us untill the actual release. I can see that happening so that people will go crazy the first day. But from the official pictures and the ad, its not there. Unless they photoshoped it and made it fake. AAAA how funny that would be. Official web-site posting pics of fake iphone. =)))))

I can dream.

But when you really think about it. Is the camera on the front such a BIG hit. Sure its exciting for first few times, but I rather my friends not see me all the time and what im doing. =))))

maybe 2010 =)

Oh well, there goes my conspiracy theories. It was fun while it lasted.

I am still holding out hope for iChat being announced before July 11th, though.

Still waiting for July 10

I'm just waiting for the July 10th "Oh by the way" conference. This is where Steve announces all the missing features(Video & Video Chat, Cut/copy/paste, etc), because he didn't want to distract too much from the WWDC.

The second sensor is at the bottom of the phone.

It's used to turn off the display for the people using it upside down on TV.

In a way I'm glad. Video calling would have been a novelty... but my freakish ears have never seemed to work with the proximity sensor.

I sometimes get the feeling iLounge's glass is always 1/4 full

From iLounge: "...will actually be a more expensive device to operate in the United States than its predecessor, thanks to a 50% or greater increase in monthly service charges."

Now, I'm disappointed that AT&T is subsidizing this phone--I liked the old way (even knowing that 3G has to cost SOMETHING more), and I wish the iPhone wasn't treated the same as other phones now. I'll deal with it, but I don't have to like it I'd rather pay $200 more up front, and have the 3G plan only cost $5 more per month instead of $10, or whatever it would have worked out to (we may never know). This new subsidy model is only good for the consumer if you replace your phone regularly, which I'd just as soon not do.

That said, the monthly increase isn't any "50% or greater." It's $10 greater than the old $59, which is 17%. Add in a text plan if you must (it's not something I care about, since I find speaking rather easy and will add a free AIM client ASAP) but it still need not be "50% or greater." It would be "17% or greater."

(Not the first time iLounge has slanted some facts against Apple instead of giving the full picture.)

i am not sure what all the fuss is about if the 3g phone was to have a camera for say ichat or other video or photo means i cant see what the big appeal is. I have a nokia n95 with a mentioned front camera and to be honest it takes crap photos and video other way round the 5mp camera is fantastic dose what i want when i need it video and photos. I am one of these people who has not yet touched an iphone so i dont know what the pic or video quality is like but if they do stick a camera on the 3g it wont be anything to impressive unless its like what apple uses on laptops and imacs now

You're joking right?

Read that out loud and see how much you're setting yourself up for a disappointment.

Mark my words

There is NO video conferencing camera.

Is there confirmation that the PowerSupport Films will fit the iPhone 3G?

They probably based it on the data charge. Both EDGE and 3G have $39.99 voice plans. EDGE had a $20 data charge, 3G has a $30 data charge. Hence the 50% hike. Actually it's a 75% hike if you factor in those 200 sms for 5 bucks.

I think iLounge was specifically singling out the data aspect of the entire plan. The data plan for the original iPhone cost $20; the new 3G data plan is set to cost $30. The difference is $10, which equates to a 50% increase in data plan costs over the original iPhone.

That said, I do see the point your making - iLounge was never known to be transparent in its writing.
