So if you can buy on line instore activation will not be necessary and presumably you will carry it out as per previous?

I am assuming the procedure is the same for any mobile phone you buy online. The SIM is locked and when you recieve the phone you need to call up O2, confirm your details, then they send a text message and the SIM is unlocked. I guess the iPhone is locked to the SIM card.

I would imagine that when you buy the iphone online you will enter your credit card details and sign up to the contract you want...when the iphone arrives you activate through itunes.

That sounds right to me too. Even if you could unlock it, you will have given your details so you have to pay the 18 month contract. So O2 don't lose out for subsidising the phone. Makes sense. I am more than happy with a £99 iPhone! Bring on July 11th :D

Thanks for emailing us and showing your interest in our new 3G iPhone.

If you upgrade to the new 3G iPhone, you'll need to sign up to a new 18 month contract. However, you won't be charged any cancellation fee to upgrade to the new 3G iPhone. This upgrade offer is available from 11 July 2008 to 11 October 2008.

You can purchase a 3G iPhone online. We won't perform another credit check, as you will only be upgrading your current contract and not starting a new contract.

We're presently offering two iPhones depending upon their storage capacity:

The 8GB iPhone 3G is free with our £45 and £75 tariffs, and costs just £99.00 with our £35 and new £30 tariffs. The 16GB iPhone 3G is free on the £75 tariff, £59.00 to buy on the £45 tariff and £159.00 to buy on the £30 and £35 tariffs.

For more information on our new 3G iPhone, please click on the link given below:

http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/paymonthly

After you've purchased a new 3G iPhone, you can keep your existing mobile number and transfer it to your new iPhone contract.

You can activate your O2 iPhone using a PC/MAC via iTunes. You'll be prompted to transfer your existing mobile number to your new iPhone contract during the activation process.

For more information on this, please click on the link given below:

http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/activation

Getting your query right the first time you email us is very important to us. If your query has not been resolved this time, please reply to this email with the words 'Need More Help' in the subject field.

Telefónica O2 UK Limited, Registered in England No 1743099. Registered Office: 260 Bath Road, Slough, Berkshire SL1 4DX.

I'm getting the impression that if your upgrading from a existing iPhone contract, they can send you one from their online store without much hassle.
