Apple Releases Xserve EFI Firmware Update 1.1

Apple today released Xserve EFI Firmware Update 1.1.

About Xserve EFI Firmware Update 1.1
This update fixes several issues to improve the stability of Xserve computers.

To complete the firmware update process, perform the following steps:
1) Locate Xserve EFI Firmware Update.app in /Applications/Utilities and double click on it.
2) Follow the onscreen instructions.

After the firmware is successfully applied to your Mac, your Boot ROM Version will be:

XS21.006C.B06

You can confirm the version of the Boot ROM installed on your computer using System Profiler.

The update requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 or later and weighs in at 1.6 MB.

Apple's got to get it together with their enterprise offerings. Simply telling me it fixes stability isn't enough. As a system administrator, I need more info than that to justify interrupting production systems.

Just because everything YOU see/use is working, doesn't mean everything behind the scenes is working as well as it COULD be.

It's that mindset that break critical 24/7/365 services more often than I can count. Good sysadmins know what is going on behind the scenes and DONT bring down critical production level machines just to install an EFI update when we have no idea what this changes. I administer OS X servers and one of them is still running 10.4.8 the other is 10.5.1 and you can bet that they're not touched during peak production when they're both being used constantly. If they're not broke, I'm not fixing it.

Now, when there is some downtime, I'll update everything on ONE and make sure there are no issues (give it a few weeks) then update the other. I've been yelling for a long time to get a server to use as a test box, but they won't comply...

You obviously have never worked with servers in a 24x7 live environment.

Appleinsider are reporting that Psystar have now come out with a Xserve clone.

Could this update just to be to break the Psystar computers?

Not from a software point-of-view. But I do put them in their pretty little cages and do server reboots per customer request.
