Exclamation Cant get macs to communicate via airport extreme

I have just bought a new macbook and my husband has an imac that he bought last october which are connected via an airport extreme. We can see each other in the finder in shared but we cant connect. Also i cant connect to a hard disc that hangs on to the airport extreme. I have checked that file sharing has been ticked in the system preferences
