Issue with Dual-Display

For some reason, no matter how I set-up dual monitors, I can not seem to get windows to treat my external display as the primary one and the laptop as the secondary, with both monitors using their default resolutions. I can get them to do this in cloning mode, but i want each monitor to be individualized.

can anyone help?
