AT&T Offers Walkthrough Videos for iPhone 3G Buying

To help clarify any confusion about the upgrade process, AT&T has posted a number of walkthrough videos giving more information about the upgrade process for customers. AT&T announced that the iPhone 3G will be on sale starting at 8 a.m. local time at their AT&T stores.

Existing AT&T Customer Video
This covers the different scenarios if you are an existing AT&T customers. AT&T recommends you back up your iPhone with iTunes prior to buying the iPhone 3G. Additionally, voicemail will be deleted when you upgrade, so you should be sure to catch up on your voicemail prior to upgrading. Once you upgrade to the iPhone 3G, you can give your original iPhone to someone else who can activate it through iTunes and sign up for new service.

New AT&T Customer Video
This video is for customers activating new service at AT&T. These individuals can visit AT&T stores prior to July 11th to undergo a credit check to save time on the actual launch day. AT&T recommends you back up your phone data prior to July 11th. You will need a photo ID and social security number to start new service. If you are interested in porting your phone number from your existing carrier, you will need: your account number, account holder name, billing address, social security number and PIN or password. Most of this information is on your bill from your current carrier.

Apple has not yet announced what time their retail stores will open on July 11th.

From the video: "Hand me down"?

You mean - sell on Craigslist or eBay to recoup some of the costs associated with the iPhone 3G.

The only questions I have are:

1. Will existing AT&T/iPhone customers be able to purchase an iPhone 3G as an upgrade from the AT&T website (through our account page) to avoid lines and hassle in the store? and...

2. Are the accessories that work with the current iPhone (namely the dock... and the dock with the Apple Bluetooth Headset) work with the iPhone 3G? I'm still contemplating Craigslisting my current iPhone (not sure, though... might hold onto it as a spare), but I don't want to include the docks if they're going to work with the new iPhone.

Credit Bureau?

Does anyone know which credit bureau AT&T uses? I called and asked them but the guy thought I was an idiot and just said all of them.

So what is the activation process for existing iphone customers?

Go in to the store, they look up your account to see if you are an existing iphone user.

They give you the subsidized price.

You leave and activate it and sign up for the plan at home via itunes?
OR
Do you have to sign up for the plan etc in store?

I will be buying multiple iphones for my family members and do not want to sign up for the plans instore, I want to do that at home.....

nope

Apple stores opened many times 3 to 4 hours earlier for some events. I am 100% sure that AT&T and Apple will open at the same time. Its pretty smart actually. 8am is right before work, so people don't have to take a day off.

After watching the AT&T video I decided to go to their store during my lunch hour. I am going to be a new AT&T customer, so I thought I'd take the advise given in the video and fill out the credit check and any other advance paperwork so that when I show up on the 11th it will be quicker and smoother.

When I got there (Folsom, CA) they knew nothing of the video. I showed it to the girl helping me. She asked me to wait a minute and she went in the back room. When she came back she told me it's a fake and there isn't going to be any advance paperwork, just come in on the 11th. I can tell already if I buy my IPhone from my local AT&T store that it's going to be a mess. Today was a normal day for the store and there was a big line and it just wasn't organized.

Last year I waited in line at the Apple store for Leopard and I must say, it was well organized and the line went quickly. I may end up going to the Apple Store in Sacramento to get my IPhone. I was hoping to buy it at the local AT&T store as it's right down the street from my house.

Eager buyer thinking twice

I plan on getting two iPhones soon after they come out. I had made this decision several months ago and I was waiting to see if there would be some breakthrough before I made the purchase. My patience was rewarded with the unveiling of the new 3G and the price break.

So put me near the front of the line, but wait a minute, what will the monthly charges be. I am currently playing about $85/month for two lines from Verizon and I see the AT&T charge is going to be $129. Ouch! That is over 50% more than I am now paying. Yes, I know that I will be getting more but that extra $540/yr. does a lot to take the shine off of the reduction in the price of the phone.

I also cringe when I think of a two year contract. Do they require all of their users to have contracts? I am reminded of Lilly Tomlin's comedy routine. "We don't care!, we are the phone company, we don't need to!"

If I upgraded to a new 3G iPhone, can I put the SIM card back into the original iPhone to prepare it for resell (jailbreak and SIMunlock)? Or can you jailbreak/unlock the original phone without a SIM card?

IPhone SS #

It is illegal for a company to require a social security number unless they have to report financial info to the IRS and the person does not have a tax ID. I never give out my SS#. THe first time I was with AT&T 5 or 6 years ago I got them to change their policy and got service without giving out my SS#. DO NO DO IT. Just tell them no. You can get info at the Social Security web site. They say it is OK for a company to ask for info but it is not OK to require the info. Credit checks can be done without SS#.

we were'nt iready...

We weren't iReady, so we threw together this poorly shot, poorly lit, video and stuck some dummy in a red shirt 'cause we know nothing about video... and 'cause we hired a high-schooler who couldn't afford a tripod and probably is trying to squeak by with a D- in a video editing class. Looks like this was shot and edited in under an hour... Great job AT&T... you guys are really portraying the quality I'm sure Apple would approve of....

Having worked for the company, I can say with 100% certainty that AT&T did not hire a high-schooler. They spent hundred of thousands of dollars to make it look trendy (shaky camera and all) and failing miserably at it.

You're being harsh. It's not great work... But it's good enough.

You've just been babied with Apple quality. To me, it shows ATT is trying to make an effort, but can't get their ***** together.

in similar news, Rogers posted a walk-through for the Canadian customers.

I don't have a link to the video, but it essentially shows a customer walking into a Rogers store, getting kicked in the balls, and then getting booted out the back door.

google it

New Hand me down

What if a customer is eligible for an upgrade but then gives the NEW iphone to someone? Will this lucky person be able to activate it?
