Firewire connection to external drive not working

I recently purchased a Macally external enclosure and a WD 320GB hard drive from NewEgg (details below). Unfortunately the firewire port doesn't seem to be working. If I use the Firewire to plug the drive into my laptop it never appears on the desktop. If I use the 2 USB connections (one for data, one for power) it works fine. Anyone have suggestions on how I might remedy this besides by buying a new one?
