Honestly guy...relax. Talk of selling your mac is a little premature at this point. You are really adding to this snowballing hysteria going on this forum with all your worrying in multiple threads!

If there is a problem then Apple will address and deal with it...or else you and I and countless other loyal customers will be breaking the doors down at every Apple store in the country....and you can take that to the bank.

I hope they address this issue but then again it reminds me of the lower memory bank going out issue with the 15" powerbook years back also they replaced the logic board for those people even well after the warranty has expired yet they replace those logic boards with the same problem boards.

There's still a thread going on about this issue as well.

dunno if this has been pointed out, or if it means much...but the refurb store is cleaned out of 15" MBPs. Still have the 17" ones though. they had a selection just a few days ago.

not to sound like an idiot, but couldnt we just:

A) somehow allow for a slower cooling process, therefore avoiding the damage?
B) keep the damn thing cool in the first place?

I had the same opinion until I just noticed this thread below

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=506784

"...Subsequent debugging indicates that the machine is misidentifying its NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT card as the MacBook’s Intel X3100 card. This issue is known to affect at least 50 people - a group of affected users has formed a Google Spreadsheet in order to document and organize cases.

AppleCare is recommending replacing the logic board, which some have gone through with, only to have the machine return to an unusable state shortly afterwards. Compounding the issue is the fact that this problem has arisen only shortly after the expiration of the default warrantee on these machines..."

I never buy extended warranties, statistically they're a silly thing to throw money at because over time you'll come out ahead sucking it up and paying for the odd failure out of pocket. But when there's evidence something is truly wrong, a design flaw that alters the statistical balance significantly, then buying the extended warrantee is a given if you actually want to keep the machine for any length of time. With Apple Care being over 15% of the cost of my machine, I'd probably be better off just selling before the 1 year warranty is up and getting whatever is out at the time that doesn't have this issue. Suffice to say I'm none too pleased about that.

EDIT: Hmm... http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=514715

This is the reason why I'm selling my mbp.

My mbp runs fine and looking at the istat pro the temperature for the gpu diode never goes above 57 and I've seen it go up to 68 at its highest from hours of using with almost every app open.

But just because its fine now doesnt mean in 6-12 months that it will run just as good especially after 2-3 years.

Are you serious..?? Mine idles at 45-55 but mostly 55-57 celcius even after using it for 5+ hours straight.

When I open all my apps on my dock 25+ apps with parallels running, I saw it go up to 68C but never higher than that.. and I left it running for 4 hours just for testing too just goes from 62-68c.

Maybe some mbp doesnt have the defective cards?

I'm more scared of the heat cycling not overheating though..

I've been running my mbp for 6 hours straight now with the usual apps around 10-13 running and it stays pretty damned cool..

With performances like that, I'd like to keep my mbp.. but then I'm just afraid in 6 months it'll turn to s*it.

well, the santa rosa machines have been out a little over a year and i dont see a sudden increase in people on here complaining about their video cards going out, so i dont think in 6 months you will have any problems

The Merom SR 2.2Ghz model looks to be the one with the GPU problem.

I'm not really worried about 6-12 months or even 1 and 1/2 years. What I'm looking at is 2 1/2-4 years when its out of warranty and your mbp is only good for paper weight or selling it on ebay for parts.

Because I know if you try to get a mbp's logic board fixed out of warranty it costs something like $1500-$1800 or almost the cost of a new laptop.

At some point I begin to wonder when someone has a legitimate question that they want answered, and when they're just intentionally trying to stir up unnecessary panic and mayhem. What do you expect to change by running around screaming about something over which you have no control? The Apple Limited Warranty and AppleCare will cover any defects. Relax!

I WANT some ANSWERS NVIDIA!!

The point of keeping this topic alive so that it won't be swept under the rug and being forgotten.

While some of you might think that.. oh well, 3 yrs later and it's time to move on.. how does that thing will even last 3 years when some are already facing continious problems with their replacements? I would rather have a functioning system after 3 yrs later that I can hand it down to others without worrying that I need to force-restart it everytime I open up cover flow..

Haha, seriously how would you react if you put a few grand on a laptop with a serious defect? I've seen people who react worse when they get one dead pixel on their new screens.. ^^
