How do I get my function keys to do their stuff within programs? For instance, in Quark F6 should unlock or lock boxes, F7 should show or hide guides; in Word F7 should spellcheck - and so on.

Neither these nor the normal shortcuts (ctrl-mouse = zoom in Quark) are working. I'm sure there must be some way to free the keys. Anyone know? I've looked in the Keyboard controls in System Prefs, but not a dicky-bird.

Mala,

check that Full Keyboard Access is turned on in Preferences (Keyboard Shortcuts) if you haven't spotted that already. Hope it helps.

Using the Fn key with the F1, F2, F3, etc keys worked immediately; tried it on a hunch and it works. Now Fn+F7 spellchecks in Word, and turns guides on and off in Qurk, and so on.

Thanks for all your help.
