Apps Crashing at Launch? Delete and Resync.

Several people have described a problem with App Store applications after restoring from a backup. When your applications are launched on your new iPhone 3G, they will only show the start screen and then immediate quit.

The issue may lie in the Digital Rights Management embedded in each of the applications. In order to restore functionality, you simply need to delete the applications from the iPhone itself, and then resync the applications from iTunes. Once restored, the applications should launch properly.

To delete applications from your iPhone, you simply press and hold on one of the icons. All the icons will then start jiggling. Simply click the "X" in the top left hand of the application and it will ask you if you want to delete it.

Note that even if you delete an application entirely from both your iPhone and your iTunes install, you can still re-download it for free. This is true no matter what the price of the application was.

Please take a look at the back up issues that Fenir and I (and I assume many others) are having and consider making this a top level item. It will affect MANY people on this board.

Fenir has a quasi fix and I explain when it occurs.

I ahve found that shutting down the unit (holding sleep wake button, sliding to power off) and the booting it right back up works 100% to fix this problem.

I'm not sure if its DRM related or just a memory issue. rebooting clears up memory, and this seems to happen when i have run a bunch of apps

if i dont sync the apps to my computer, and just download them from the phone will the apps not fail at launch?

it seems to be fine for the last 3 hours, but it could go at anytime!

There may be a few issues going on. One of them does appear to to be rights related as the OP suggests. I found that just installing or reinstalling a single app corrects all failing apps. You can do this on the road by just getting any small app via EDGE/3G.

The second issue appears to be memory related and can be more serious. I had filled up my iPhone with media and had 0k free resulting in about half of my apps not launching. Freeing the memory did not fix the issue, nor did reinstalling the failing apps. I ended up restoring my iPhone to get it working again.

Lastly many of the apps are just plain buggy right now.

I had a problem with Super Monkey Ball crashing out after the start screen earlier today. Shutting down the iPhone and restarting solved the problem. No delete and reinstall was needed.

If I buy an application, can I only install it on my iPhone?

I had this problem, but I didn't restore it...It was fixed by simply rebooting it.

Why is this true for iPhone applications but not for purchased music? Is there a technical difference or is this just a policy difference?

I've got an original iphone running 2.0. When I open the free app "Urban Spoon" it launches and then quickly crashes. I've tried rebooting and deleting and reinstalling. Oh well, plenty of other restaurant apps.

Excellent question.
DRM are incorporated in both so I would say it's a policy difference.
Apple could very well keep track of music downloads and allow one or several redownloads.
I think other online music stores do that.

i have had this same problem. I'll be in an app and it will crash. Then I'll try another app and that one crashes. The more apps I try the more the crash until eventually it will reboot on its own. After the reboot, things work fine again. Pretty sure its a memory problem for me.

Same for me

Yeah, I have had repeated problems with AIM...I had it working on Thursday with my old iPhone and then it started crashing. I got it on the new phone and it worked for a short time, then it too was crashing. I have removed it from the phone and will try to reinstall it.

same here! I've re-installed it 3 times now and each time it will work maybe 4-5 times and then it just crashes upon launch!

Once you have downloaded an app onto iTunes, does it install on as many iPhones and iPod Touches as you happen to have/own or is it a one device at a time sort of thing?

Deleting Apps Not Necessary

I found that my apps crash on my original iPhone running the new firmware 2.0 when I try to arrange the icons. This will cause my apps to crash immediately. My fix is much simpler. Simply turn off you iPhone and then turn it back on. This fixes the issues for me.

Thumbs down 3G iPhone - All Free Apps Crash

First post

I've been enjoying my new iPhone for the last 24hrs, however, now all of the free apps (BoA, yellow pages, aol radio, cube runner and jirbo match) that I installed crash/close instantly at launch. Any suggestions? I have no issues with the apps that came with the phone...

First off, did u restore the phone to the newest firmware when u got home? Just plug it in to intunes and restore it. Be sure to back it up first. Mine was doing the same till i restored it. The 3g phone didnt come with the latest firmware which ended in 347 not 345. I have over 25 free apps and all run perfect.
