How to use old iPhone as iPod touch???

OK, I upgraded by 1st gen iPhone to 2.0 before buying the iPhone 3G. When I bought the iPhone 3G at AT&T, they took the sim out of my old iPhone & put it in the new iPhone 3G. They gave me the new sim that was in the box for the new iPhone 3G in case I ever needed it.

Now, I don't know how to turn the old iPhone into an iPod Touch. When I turn it on, it tells me to connect it to iTunes. iTunes then wants me to activate it with AT&T, which I don't want to do. It won't just let me transfer music, etc. to it. HELP!
 
Quickest way would be to put your old SIM back in your old iPhone, put the new SIM in your new iPhone, then sync your new iPhone and reactivate it on the new SIM.

Then, put your old iPhone in Airplane mode, and turn on WiFi.
 
Doesn't work

I tried the above process, but when I plug the old iPhone in with either SIM card, it wants me to activate it with AT&T & buy another line or replace my 3G iPhone with it!

Any other ideas? I can't believe there aren't more people wanting to do this. Maybe everyone else just sold their phones so people can use them as phones & not as iPod Touch's.
 
AT&T should have deactivated your first SIM card and then gave you a new SIM for your new phone.

With the deactivated SIM in your old iPhone, you can restore in iTunes as many times as you want and it will activate your phone for you without having to purchase a line.
