Intel Announces Centrino 2 (Montevina)

Today, Intel announced their Centrino 2 (Montevina) platform which incorporates a faster Penryn Core 2 Duo processor, faster bus speed, faster integrated graphics (GMA X4500) and the option of WiMax support.

The new Penryn chips will run from 2.26 GHz up to 3.06 GHz with a 1066MHz Front Side Bus. This is an improvement over the existing processors which range from 2.1 GHz to 2.8 GHz with a 800 Mhz Front Side Bus which currently power Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro. Apple is expected to incorporate the new processors in the next version of the MacBook and MacBook Pro. Historically, Apple has not adopted Intel's platforms in their entirety, so, for example, they may choose not support to WiMax, a next generation wireless broadbrand standard.

Apple's laptops were last upgraded in February with only modest speed bumps. While Montevina's speed upgrades are also said to be modest, it has also been rumored that Apple will be revamping the physical design of their next notebooks to bring them in line with the current iMac and MacBook Air. Recently leaked photos depicting a more tapered design of the MacBook Pro are believed to be real. Apple's next laptops are rumored to arrive sometime during Q3 2008 (July-September).

Meanwhile, Intel's next major processor revision starts in late 2008 and continues into 2009 with Nehalem. Nehalem promises dramatic speed increases and increased multi-threading and multi-core designs. Nehalem processors suitable for notebooks, however, will not likely arrive until well into 2009.

Thank god, some mac stuff also after a deluge of iphone stories. Not that I mind it excessively, but still.

doubt it. im guessing Apple will wait till the iPhone rush cools off a bit and introduce them at the end of this month and maybe next month.

Over 200 new laptops will be introduced tommorow. Why would Apple announce theirs in the midst of all that? Also, since the integrated graphics version of the chip isn't available for shipment, I'm guessing that Apple will wait at least a couple of weeks.

Does anyone know if a reduced clock speed penryn in the Montevina platform will work in an MBA.

If so this may remove the last obstacle to the MBA. A MBA with better integrated graphics, wimax, and one of the new 128 GB SSD drives would be really sweet.

Mmmm. Montevina MBP. Me likey.

I'm choking along on an old PB G4 with a bad screen flicker problem. I'll continue to limp until there is a new MBP, but man am I ready!

Agreement?

I think most of us are in agreement that any update just needs to come out before school (while the itouch promo is going on)

Can we expect more? I mean everyday it's just more ghz, and then more front bus. We never have something that make people excited. Look at Apple iPod lines, never great change, but everytime it's out, it's really bring something out of our expectation. But not every company can act like Apple

Not even remotely possible. Intel announcing and/or releasing a CPU != ramped up production to handle Apple's requirements.

The only time Apple has gotten Intel product ahead of others were with low volume items.

Not exactly true. The MBA was the first to receive intels special reduced size core duo and associated chipset. The MBA led all other laptops in sales this year. Why couldn't the MBA get the Montevina?

Besides intel must have sufficient quantities to allow the release because many other vendors are announcing new laptops soon based on the new Montevina platform.

I'd much rather see a better graphics card solution for the Macbook than yet another tiny speed increase. The article doesn't say much about the new integrated chipset, but based on Intel's previous performance, I wouldn't expect much.

Apple will certainly have to wait until the iPhone frenzy cools down. The last thing their staff need is another billion people trying to cram into their stores. I think we are looking at a release date of 1-2 months.

Are these similar to the chips that went into the last iMac update?
