2004 to Bring 'Free' Net Music
CNN writes that "The great digital music giveaway is about to begin."
They expect that next year will mark a push by companies to push their music download services. Already known is that Pepsi and Apple will be giving away 100 million songs on specially marked Pepsi products. Napster is also getting into the game with the Miller Brewing company giving away "thousands of Napster-branded digital music players and downloads next summer" CNN also confirms that McDonald's has been discussing marketing possibilities with "a number of online music distributors". Rumors of a McDonald's/iTunes giveaway emerged in early November. (MacRumors has continued to hear hints that the deal is in place.) The goal of all these giveaways appears to establish and foster customer loyalty and promote sales of related products. Last edited by arn : Dec 22, 2003 at 10:16 PM. |

The iTunes/McDonalds thing would solidify the iTMS and iPod market dominance for years to come IMO.
Not to say that they won't continue to be the leaders, but a billion song give away would seal the deal for me. |

Napster and Miller??
I guess you would have to be drunk to use Napster.
But it looks like Napster is not going after the kids but the 21 and above young adults market. To me Apple has the best deal with Pepsi which everyone drinks unless your a water drinker or diehard Coke drinker. And having McDonalds on board will even spread the general appeal of the iPod over the mass markets. |

Free Music?
Yeah, we already have free music, it's on the radio. So, what's new about it?
Downloadable music will never be for free. And computers will never be for free. And iPods and other music players .. sometimes it seems to me that news people (CNN and similar) are just chattering with no brains at all.

I guess Napster and Miller makes sense. Watered down music downloads with watered down beer.
The low end iPod rumors would fit in very well here since a lot the people getting this music may not buy the current hig end iPods.

McDonalds is awesome. I eat that garbage 3 or 4 times a week... it's a great hole filler when you're dirt poor. I'd probably eat there every day if I got some free songs with my food.

Now they only need to make a deal with Taco Bells and Subway and Dominos( or Papa Johns or Pizza Hut) and they will pretty much have killed the fast food market

So 2003 was the year of suing us for downloading music and 2004 is the year of them giving it away?

check this report out
9:00 AM] UK Newspapers: iPod Is Must-Have Device, Shops Can't Get Enough A newspaper story has hit the stands in the UK reporting the iPod is red hot amongst Brits (including the Welsh and Scots, it would seem).[...] It is hailed as the gadget to revolutionise the way we listen to music. David Beckham has one and now demand for the iPod is soaring. But shops are struggling to cope with the clamour for the lightweight, digital music player which can hold 10,000 songs and is the "must-have" Christmas gift this year. Selfridges in London sold out last week and the John Lewis chain is taking orders for delivery after Christmas. |

Just the other day, at a small rural gas station, I saw a poster for Napster: 15 songs for 14.85. I think that they were even selling Napster Cards inside. It sounds like Napster may prove to be a major compettitor to ITMS, but the software interface isn't as cool.

Yeah I remember that.
Coke did something like that in the early 90's where you could win music CD's from them. |

Meh
I sure as hell hope Apple and McDonald's team up for this promotion, because Apple makes some great commercials. I can't say the same for McDonalds. If I see one of those "I'm Lovin' It" ads one more time I swear I will just throw my tv out the window. They are truly that annoying.

While we're at it, McDonalds should also sell songs on their $1 value menu.

McDonalds and Pepsi?
Umm, it seems to me that I've never seen a McDonalds that offered Pepsi. Granted I don't eat there often. Still, it would seem that Pepsi, being #2 in the soda wars, would want to set up deals with it's brands, as mentioned above, and perhaps have some kind of non-compete clause in the agreement.
KFC+Taco Bell + Pizza Hut < McDonalds Just a thought. - me |
