2G iPhone as backup to iPhone 3G - With iPhone 3G SIM

Has anyone tried swapping the SIM from your new iPhone 3G into your 2G iPhone? When I insert my new SIM and connect to iTunes, I'm forwarded to a new activation process. I'd love to have my 2G as a backup.
