iPhone Remains Effectively Sold Out in U.S.

MacNN reports that a survey of Apple's iPhone availability tool shows that the iPhone 3G is effectively sold out across the country.

Only 3 stores appear to have any stock for Monday morning.
Quote:
Apple notes that on Monday none of its 137 locations in the US will have stock of the 8GB iPhone and that the only location to have the 16GB black iPhone will be its retail store in Pleasanton, California (Stoneridge Mall). The only other two stores to have stock of the iPhone are the retail locations in Salem, New Hampshire (Rockingham Park) and New York City (Fifth Avenue) -- both of which only have the 16GB white iPhone model

So, what happens now?

Has Apple said that production is ongoing, deliveries are ongoing, and a few phones will be arriving every single day .... or has Apple said "if you didn't get one ... sucks for you! Hahaha!" So what's the scoop? Will there be zero inventory for the next few weeks, or will there be limited shipments?

Salem NH doesn't have them either, I was there yesterday. The inventory on the web site is wrong.

Yip, the inventory tool is useless... Definitely call before you go in.

I missioned up to the Regent street store (I'm in the UK) as they were apparently the only store in the UK with 16GB black stock, only to find out they had none... Pretty irritating that the inventory tool is in fact, useless.

sigh.

well, it's pretty clear why they don't deliver: they have a major quality issue concerning 3G reception, which Apple needs to solve before they can deliver more:

This should be expected considering they launched in 20 0r 22 countrys on the same day.

Give it some time, I know in my local store allot of the kids going back to college are looking for them.

I have also seen them for sale on Craigslist already

I would say that's far from clear. Any problem will sound common, or even universal, if you read a thread in a support forum.

Reception could well be AT&Ts 3G changes anyway--which don't require Apple to stop selling iPhones.

seems pretty universal, with 17.000 readers and 450 posts, not counting the numerous discussions elsewhere. and it's not only ATT - it's a worldwide phenomenon with all kinds of carriers, only on the iPhone 3G, all other devices work fine in the same spot.

I'm pretty sure they have a quality issue there which limits their production output.

I am so happy I waited in line for 1 1/2 hours on the 2nd day for mine. It was worth it and my 3G is solid too. I love the fact that my old iPhone is still worth good money too. I got to stop going to the App Store. I'll spend more money than on my AT&T service.

3G reception trouble = nonsense.

All you Americans listen the peep up, every opinion I have heard about European 3G owners have no problems with this, why?

Because we have 3G networks for years, and it's almost everywhere 100% coverage, even inside.

You Americans are just fed up with 5 year old standards, come on don't go blame it on the iPhone because companies over the great pond are now figuring out that customers want this. America should innovate more in telecom technology. Just look to Austria and even the rest of Europe. We are getting 3,6 MBPS and look at America:

Wow man we have 300 markets (whatever that means) with 1,4 MBPS.

And now even reports going to about 50kb/s, har har, what a laugher.

3G iPhone is fine except the software, so except Apple is ramping up full production now.

Nonsense: http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2008...ng-to-keep-up/

"Posters on Howard forums are reporting slower than expected AT&T 3G internet connectivity in several markets across the country. These observations have been made on a variety of 3G-enabled devices."

I'm in a really good isolated home now, The Netherlands, Europe, where cell signals don't penetrate so well, but still I have full bar coverage, and 3G.

I'm feeling the same way. Took me about 2 hours last Monday to get mine (1 hour in line, 1 hour with the Apple guy to work through some issues with ATT) and it was sooooo worth it. Love the phone, get good 3g reception between my house and work in Boston, needed the extra 8 GBs of storage.... BUT am spending WAY too much $$$ at the App Store!

Is there a support group out there yet for App Store Addicts? I need to join App Store Anonymous - ASA?

Not true. The reception problem is REAL.

read the posts, they're from Europe, Netherlands, you name it:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread....02608&tstart=0

By the way: I'm from Germany, and we have 7.2 MBPS 3G networks here.

Well if it's really that iPhone that's having the problems, which I highly doubt. And if even so, they would be unique and not more then 1% maybe? I couldn't care less har har, I do not have a single problem, and Apple is still selling these things like hot cakes, I'm wondering when the 2 million sold mark is out.

call the store

I found that the online stock report is totally incorrect. Friday I called my Apple store (Madison, WI West Towne Mall) after watching the stock report show red all week. I called at 10:05 and the staff told me they had all 3 models. He said the line was about 15 people long. I dressed the kids, got there around 10:45. Got in line, I was about 10 - 12th when I walked up. The staff member started working with me around 11:30 and I walked out with 2 iPhones for my husband and I at noon. Thank goodness for the kids computers, it was actually a relatively enjoyable experience because both my 2 and 4 year were playing Dora and Sesame Street the whole time.

My advise is to call the store in the morning, or just show up at the mall/store. I got the impression that the store probably had stock all week, but it was a smaller amount so when I was calling at midday (due to a.m. commitments) they had already sold out.

Hope that helps.

P.S. No problems with mine, as a new iPhone owner I am loving it.

The online availability is basically useless. All it shows is whether a store has phones at the end of the day. I got my iPhone on Friday at the Houston flagship store even though they have been showing "no availability" every night for about the past week. They have gotten shipments of iPhones basically every morning so they don't show up on the availability on the website at night. The guys at the store said they don't know if there will be iPhones in the shipment or how many there will be until they unpack it, but so far they have been getting shipments basically every day. I don't know if other stores are getting as many iPhones or if this one gets more since it is the biggest store in the 4th largest city in the US.

Hahahaha. Exactly my point. Even South Africas 3G network is YEARS ahead of Americas crappy network!

You know why the stock report on Apple's website is bad? Because stores can get shipments anytime during the day. My local Apple store said it was only getting white and it turns out that 4 hours after they opened they got 16GB Blacks in. So you really can't trust the website, you HAVE to call.

Im in Canada and while AT&T was late in the game to introduce 3G, so was Rogers, but Ive only had great speeds on 3G, and the US is only an hour away. I usually have 5 bars when I am on 3G.. minus last night.. 400,000 people for a Paul McCartney concert.. kind of hard to have a stable signal.. but I did most of the time

Angry 2 hour wait

its amazing, but the flagship stores in NYC (SoHo, West 14th, and 5th avenue) all require a 2 - 4 hour wait in the blazing heat to get a phone. Well, that is, to potentially get a phone since their online inventory availability is USELESS!
