Snow Leopard to Provide Icon-Level Previews

AppleInsider reports that the preview version of Snow Leopard provides users with a quick way to review audio files within Finder:
Quote:
One person familiar with the pre-release software notes that hovering the mouse pointer over an audio file in Snow Leopard's Finder will trigger a triangular 'play' button to appear on the icon itself. Clicking the button will allow the audio file to play within the Finder, but without opening a specialized preview window.

pretty nice. I like the Quick Look preview in 10.5 with the album art.

So much for "no new features." Not that I'm complaining of course.

WOW!

That's seriously amazing. I hope Snow Leopard's Finder will be able to support icon sizes up to 512 pixels (up from Leopard's 128) to better make use of this.

I was hoping for Skimming support though.

I think this should be on the front page.

Leopard already supports up to 512 px. Tiger supported up to 128 px.

The advancement of Finder-level functionality has been one of my favorite aspects of Leopard. This development only furthers said functionality.
Neat!

There's a Quick Look window that opens. Snow Leopard will play files directly from the icon. Also if you switch applications the file still plays, unlike with Leopard.

The Finder doesn't. The "View Options" mini-window still has a 128-pixel limit.

How about folder previews on the icon level?

That's really cool, but Linux had had that for like 4 years now. It's so funny how new features are added to OS X, and all the fan boys jump up and down as if Apple came out with this cool new feature when the rest of the world has had it for years.

I'm sure the finder will get more tweaks as it inches towards Cocoa.

Yep, if by "the rest of the world" you mean only a bunch of people...

Unfortunately, nobody uses Linux.

Funnier than referring to Linux as "the rest of the world?"

I don't use Linux.
I use OS X.
I'm not on a Linux forum.
I'm on a Mac forum.
Why on earth would I know, let alone care, about features of an OS I don't use?

Not it has; previews based on hovering over the file only appeared in GNOME 2.22.x recently. So not, it hasn't bee a matter of '4 years'.

Please, take your trollage somewhere else.

It's even more amusing when Windows fanboys jump up and down as if Microsoft came out with a cool new feature. Microsoft steals from Apple who steals from Linux. No wonder Microsoft is years behind everyone else.

Having not seen/used it, what I'm liking about the concept is less screen clutter.
Not that Quicklook is bad - I heart Quicklook. A lot. Very efficient.
This just sounds even cleaner/more efficient.

I so hope that is in snow leopard, wouldn't that count as a new feature though?

That's what I was thinking.

And it would make sense that the preview would play in an icon instead of in a window, because icon previews are less clutter (so less hand/arm usage) than opening and closing a window, both for the iPhone / iPod touch / mini-tablet and a possible touchscreen Mac.

Apple never said Snow loepard wont provide ANY new features... its just not gonna be apples primary focus. In leopard apple was clearly trying to add features, from quick look, to spaces.

But when you think about it, this isnt even a new feature, its simply a tweak (or improvement) to a previous features. As we all know, snow leopards purpose is to tweak, and the improve the over all OS in as many ways as possible.

There was a slide saying "0 New Features" at WWDC.

I think you have to select the arrow on the file to use icon Quick Look.
