HP Delivers Printer Driver Update via Software Update

HP delivered new printer drivers (version 1.1) to Mac OS X users last week via Software Update. The 405.1MB download is only available if an HP printer is connected to your system. It includes "the latest drivers for printers you have used on your system."

Apple has started delivering updates to 3rd party printer drivers in the recent past with Brother and Canon updates similarly released in June.

How can I tell if I have these drivers? I have an HP printer and it doesn't show up in Software update.

Why does a sodding printer driver have to be 405.1MB big??!!! Even the most complex graphics drivers that support hundreds of variants of cards are under about 50mb. I've had to sit and wait while drivers for a printer have taken two hours to install before. WHY?!!!!

Weighed in at 90MB for me.

Safari is somewhat snappier though.

I however get my e-mail printed via Google's paper service, so my printer is not used so I cannot comment on that.

Get your head out of your pants. How can printer drivers make a browser faster. What is it with certain people that always say after an update, "Safari is snappier™."

It's a joke. Apple is always saying how fast Safari is. Update=Snappiness.

You forgot to mention that the System Requirements are Mac OS X 10.5.3 or later. So, if you have 10.5.2 or earlier, yuz outta luck.

I have a Laserjet 1020. It's never been officially supported. There were hacked 1022 drivers that worked for the 1020, but since installing this update my 1020 doesn't work at all, even after re-installing the hacked 1022 drivers.

My only option is to probably get a new printer or re-install and ignore these drivers.

Let me guess. Printing within Safari is faster [if] you own a HP printer.

I ignored this update anyway and leave Safari alone. Canon Pixma user here.

I got the update last week as well although it seems kind of random so I would wait if you haven't gotten it already.

i have an hp all-in-one hunk o junk and ever since this 'update' whatever app i'm trying to print from crashes as soon as i select print.

as much as i like my computer, i'm really sick of stuff just not working. for sure, i have far fewer problems with the mac os than windows but come on already. its just a printer, can't it just work? i know nothing about programming whatsoever, but really? updated printer drivers make my programs crash? i can edit movies, record records and manipulate huge images but i can't just print a text file without something crashing? anyone else have this issue, or am i the only lucky one?

the funny thing is that even after the update, when i print from windows via parallels, i have no problems. oh well, back to hp.com for the old drivers.

I had to reinstall my 2605dn. After updating everytime it would try to send a document to the printer the printer would pause and the following entry would show up in the system log:
Jul 21 11:48:36 snoopy Preview[367]: Error loading /Library/Printers/PPD Plugins/AdobePDFPDE700.plugin/Contents/MacOS/AdobePDFPDE700: dlopen(/Library/Printers/PPD Plugins/AdobePDFPDE700.plugin/Contents/MacOS/AdobePDFPDE700, 265): no suitable image found. Did find:\n /Library/Printers/PPD Plugins/AdobePDFPDE700.plugin/Contents/MacOS/AdobePDFPDE700: mach-o, but wrong architecture

Got this and was surprised

I use two HP printers though so if it continues to make my printing on my mac so simple, I am all for it

Mine is also a flat 90MB. Strange that I have an HP printer installed on my computer, but I only use it during the schoolyear, so it's physically not installed right now. What I hope it fixes for me is that the last 2 PowerPC processes I have in Activity Monitor are HP Communications and the Print Daemon, even the Leopard HP Driver didn't fix that, so here's hoping. I'l probably just wait until I need to use the printer to install the new drivers.

I wish every piece of software used Software Update, especially Office applications.

I detest Microsoft Auto-Update with every bone in my body!

What does it actually do? I have a D5160 PhotoSmart and it does everything on my Mac that it does on the Windows PC (even panoramic photo stitching) so do i need this?

before driver update: i can print to my HP printer, but the scanner won't push the images into Leopard like it used to with Tiger

after driver update: i can print to my HP printer, but the scanner won't push the images into Leopard like it used to with Tiger

i'm not seeing what it is that they've changed/fixed

Try Gutenprint, HPIJS, or USBTB. Those are pretty good 3rd party, open-source drivers. Sometimes they even work better than HP drivers.

Since I installed the update I've not been able to print anything.

Everything was fine before... I guess that'll teach me to try and fix something that's not broken.

I have a C7180 all in one. Has anyone else had any problems like this?

Looks like I'm going to have to install the old drivers! What's the best way do do that? Should I uninstall all the software and reinstall the old version of everything or can I just reinstall the old drivers?

Thanks,

Ben.

um, ditto. I have an HP 5740 and it keeps having issues since this update. The ink light flashes, the computer can't establish a connection to the printer, etc. Ugh.

Like Ben said, I shouldn't have tried to fix something that wasn't broken. Now I have to find the old drivers and reinstall them. What a mess.

edit: tried reinstalling 2 older drivers, no luck... the ink light just keeps flashing (it has plenty of ink), and when I go to print, the printer keeps pausing itself and won't print at all. Thanks a lot Apple and HP.
