Upgrading from 10.2

I'd like to upgrade to OS 10.3, but I don't want to lose the settings for my installed programs which are stored in each user profile. Can I install 10.3 from the CD just like a regular update which will update the installed programs and add new features without damaging anything? Does a full support contract come with the purchase? I was surprised that AppleCare for the computer stops whenever a problem arises related to a network or anything that requires use of the root user. 😱 At least the people at the Apple Store aren't like the stubborn ones on the phone and will really try to help with any Mac issue. 🙂

If you use the distribution CD to upgrade from MacOS X 10.2.x to MacOS X 10.3, you will not lose your settings.
 
I would recommend that you don't do just an upgrade. Your just asking yourself for a lot of trouble. If you still want to try it make sure you REPAIR YOUR PERMISSIONS FIRST! (Your hard drive/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility) Select the partition you booted from and then click repair permissions.


You can back up your whole Home folder from Jaguar and just replace what you need from that.

If you back up your Home folder then your settings for your apps should be saved. Then you can do the recommended installation of Erase and Install. This will wipe your HDD completely out and put a fresh copy of Panther on there.
 
When I switched from 10.2 to 10.3, (I'm not sure whether I did an update, clean install, or whatever) everything on my Hard Drive remained. Repair permissions both before and after the install. If your machine is lagging, it may be caused by Konfabulator(it gave me some problems), and if you use Toast, Version 5 won't work with Panther.
 
I have two Macs, a Duel 1 GB Powermac MDD, and a 1.25 GB Powerbook. I did a clean install on the Powerbook as it was only a few weeks old, on the PowerMac I just did an upgrade. Both methods worked fine for me without any problems. I have Toast 5 and that works fine with Panther with the latest patch installed.
