Got 1.8 Dual + AMD3000+, will fold for fame and action

title sez it all. I had problems installing the terminal client and wound up with two installations (!) niether of which worked.

How much performance hit does the graphical clients have compared to the shell? A lot?

Is the dual cpu script needed still for the new 4.0 client, or will it just figger out I got some horsepower and config it all ok?

Ok, I just made it easy on myself and dl'ed the GUI client. Now crunching away with the G5 ---- 6% done so far.

same name on folding as here.
 
Are you sure neither of them worked? You don't want the GUI client because you have a DP mac, and it only uses one CPU. Try this, quit the GUI client, go to the terminal and type RID. Then try to install the DP scripts in the FAQ that mc68k made. After that, type TOP in the terminal, and scroll around looking for a FAH_78CORE or something. If that is there it worked (everything will be invisible). Then type work to see your current progress.

For the Athlon, just use the GUI client.
 
Ok, figgured out what I did wrong. 🙄

I got 2 folders in my Lib: F@H1 F@H2 and did a top -u

shows two fah_78's both rockin at 95%+ cpu usage. It's workin.

too bad my first work unit is a frankenstein....10 DAYS until completion.

What do you mean? Open up those F@H1 and F@H2 folders and check the FAHLog.txt files, and scroll down until it looks something like this, and then post it here

EDIT : Mine are REALLY slow on my G4 because I was doing some heavy programming and compileing

You can take how long each % takes and multiply that by 100 to figure out how many minutes the work unit will take. I am curious to see how fast those G5's are, so I really want to see that log!
 
Maybe I read it wrong - something about a expected due date on Jan 10th? anyways.....how fast is this? From the F@H1 folder, F@H2 folder has similar....

whats the verdict? I'm not experienced enough to know whats fast and whats not. 33% done as of now.

Update: now have the console client rocking on the AMD 3000+. BTW these machines are left on 24 X 7.
 
Wow, thats pretty fast, That work unit is worth about 50-60 points I think, and it will take you about 11 hours to finish, so thats over 200 points a day with that G5! (the 900 series are slightly faster than all the other WU's, so thats why I subtracted about 30 points). There is a boost you can do with the athlon XP machine, find the shortcut to it, and go to properties, and under the file path add -forceSSE (with the 4.0 client), or -forceasm with the 3.25 client. That will give you about a 30% speed increase, but there is a chance it will freeze. If the machine starts to freeze a lot, delete that -force flag.

I wish I had a G5, I can't wait until next summer when I have the cash to get a brand new G6 dual 3GHZ (that should be at least 350 points per day 😛)
 
Its seems like on very cursory examination that my G5 is BEATING THE SNOT out of my Athlon 3000. I'll compare the posted counts a bit later on.

Well, its very clear that one of my CPU's is working on 1 job and the other is working on some other job.

So you can see both cpu's are not crunching the same thing. Should they be? I used the dual CPU script to set it up.

Yes that is how it should run.

Each CPU is running 1 Work Unit (WU)... This will be quite productive.

It is working fine.
 
when multithreaded apps use both CPUs, u will see '~200%' processor usage in top

these clients are not multithreaded. each client by itself uses only ~100%-- thus the need for 2 different work units with 2 different clients. if the console client was multithreaded, my setup scripts would be a lot simpler
 
So far I have 237 points and 10 WU done after 1.5 days. What kind of setups are you guys running? I'm thinking about getting some cheap MP hardware to setup just for folding. Like a farm of athlon MP's in 1U server cases.

Not sure but maybe the bug has bit me. 😀
 
Erk. My PC crapped out 2 of the WU's. 🙁

I got the thing OC'ed too high for 100% folding CPU usage. There go 2 WU's, rut-roh.

I reset it back a notch to 2.17 Ghz proper with the stock FSB and restarted the terminal. Also took the opportunity to add -local, -advmethods, and -forcesse to it. Hopefully the forced SSE wont make it freeze like I've been reading about. I also got rid of the pretty graphics and lost all the un-needed services.

I am going to build a farm for this team for sure. Just gotta find the biggest bang for the buck. From everything I've read, nothing matters as much as how many CPU's you got, followed by raw CPU speed. I would love to make it all G4 based but I dont see how. I'd love to whomp some other teams using all mac power.

look out folks, I got it bad. 😀

Dear (but mis-guided) Selector,

The first order of business should be to choose a proper team 😉 . A team who's board at the very least allows the posting of piccies 😡 .

The MacRumor's team sucks out loud, the Knights Who Say Ni team does not. I'd definitely go with the latter 😀 . Besides, we know a lot about farm building 😉 . We use MAC's on our team to prop up the tables holding the farms and to test the catapults 😛 .

The only condition for entry to our team is that you're a fully-fledged certifiable LOONIE I have collected all of your posts from this board and assembled them into a single body of work which will be brought before the KWSN entry committee. From a review of your posts, and your initial decision to join this crappy team, you're definitely a LOONIE and will fit tight in 😎 .

Thank you for your consideration in regards to recruiting Selecter for your team. Joining the Knights however would have several disadvantages; the requirements to wear branches and shrubbery and suffer the outrageous blasts of wind eminating from your posterior renders his decision quite permanent to remain folding for Macrumors.com Team Folding.

As Selecter is new to the game he is winding his way down the path all new folders must take, that of figuring out how best to apply his efforts and what kit to best achieve them with. By studying the free material on this subject, and asking for help when needed, Selecter has proven to be a quick study, and is about to chart a fateful course in the Folding project's history.

He will only be too happy to inform The Knights of his ongoing progress as the month rolls by. With luck his new 24 X 7 folding farm should be fully operational on or about Feb 13th, just in time to accelerate the passing of the Knights. He will build a mock up using low powered CPU's as proof of concept, then switch to "the final solution" after the bugs are worked out. The progress will not seem so threatening at first glance, but you have been warned. He has resources, and once interested in something, usually persues it obsessively.
