[Jaguar] What is this equal to?

cant say ive ever seen it in 10.1

it might just be a developer thing -- if serious bugs are ecountered in the "alpha" operating system, this probably is the result...

possibly a kernel panic, but it may be on another level.. i dont think apple will be changing around the kernel much, anyways, in 10.2 - jus changin around diff parts of thge os...
 
First of all, could you make those pictures a little bigger? I don't think dial-up completely rendered them. 🙂

Second, I have seen rumors that Jaguar has more user-friendly kernel panics, but I cannot confirm that, since I do not have Jaguar.

Third, I do not want to see a kernel panic on my Mac ever. So far in OS X I have probably been lucky, and the OS hasn't F'ed up badly ever. (Can you say J!nx?)

But I am pretty sure that from other rumors Apple is trying to make the kernel panic more user friendly. Again, I have no idea what it is like, so I couldn't tell you anything else.

If kernel panics now look like this, it is a very good thing. Currently, kernel panics are a very scary thing for someone who's never seen it happen before. My dad completely freaked the first time (and only time so far) he saw it!
 
I still have yet to see a kernel panic! I'd really like to, actually...

Anyone know how to cause one intentionally? 😀

Plug in an iSub and change the volume repeatedly and alternate very quickly between them to the point that it gets confused. I did this to a Flat Panel at CompUSA and it panicked.
 
never had a kernel panic since the days of 10.0.3, though my finder bombs about once or twice a day, sometimes while Im away....I look back at the log in terminal, and yep, there it is, finder crash? how odd, though I've never restarted due to it...I just keep chuggalugging along!
 
I have had a couple of Kernal Panics but this is mostly due to my errors!

I would prefer a 'user' friendly panic rather than the horrible black text which scares the people at my work 🙂

I have had that in the X.2 Beta once. It seems that the Kernal Panic is now user friendly. It was even in multiple languages which I thought was rather funny actually. So yes, you are not the only one to see it.
 
That's almost a shame. I quite liked the UNIX text coming up on the screen, giving me a minor shock. So much so that i did the same thing again, just to see it once more 😀 I managed to get it at will using Dave. Reinstalling that cured my mac though.

Please, leave us something shocking with the OS! 😉 😀

I have yet to have one on my own machine...but a good friend of mine called me up to fix her TiBook...

I've never seen a computer so far out of whack!! freezes in 9....kernel panics galore in X!!! I'd never seen one up till last week...

to answer your question though...no I've never seen that...sorry 😉
 
10.2 Kern

I had that error come up everytime after I installed Jag. on my system. Turns out it was Norton Firewall's preferences that prevented me from starting up. As soon as I ditched those prefs. and libs, everything was ok. I'm using an old iMac with 10.2 and overall, not bad. Not GREAT but slgithly faster than 10.1.5. CD-RW still doesn't work, but I have to upgrade soon anyway.

There are a few easy ways to make your system panic. One would be to put PC100 memory into a system that uses only PC133. Another would be to setup a hard drive on a rev. a TiBook, with everything installed and then slip it into a rev. c TiBook (I did this one).

Don't be too surprised if your computer grows an arm and starts beating you over those though. 😀
 
I posted this a while back

When I first got Jaguar and installed it, I got the same screen while using it. In my previous post I said it was a kernel panic, Apple style. It's much more user friendly than just text on the screen. Most people would get a kernel panic and call Apple. Not everyone knows to just restart. Apple had to add this because the people using OS X aren't *nix pros, they're people who don't know what USB, LCD, or MHz are. They juse see a keyboard and mouse and know its a computer.

Not always true. Often the OS will display a message at start-up telling you there is a memory problem. But I have seen kernal panics as well...

As for the original question in this thread. Yes, I have seen the new message in "Jaguar", and when it happened, it was probably a kernal panic due to a network error.

When I first saw it I saw that line I thought it was referring to the kernel panic...that would have been wierd.

As for PCxxx memory and kernel panic issues, my dad installed what was supposed to be PC66 memory for my FW iBook and instead of starting up the iBook's light flash and I heard a beeping sound. It turned out the memory was PC100.

I do not think that such an issue would be a kernel panic, but at least I didn't go "HJFJ!" 🙂
 
It's a kernal panic. the same kind that you get in 10.1 when you get all that ugly OCR text, and your machine dies. Only now they made it pretty.

I've had numerous kernal panics on my DP 500MHz machine. It's a recurring issue. It doesn't matter if I do a clean install, or eliminate OS 9. It's the same deal. Any one else have this issue with the rev A DP's? I think the rev A had a bus or address issue.

well at least if i crash in jaguar, it won't bee so vulgar.

well, there's your problem. all that Norton stuff is complete and total garbage. ESPECIALLY Norton Utilities. I've never known anyone with Norton Utilities installed that didn't have major and frequent system and hardware crashes.

Of course when it crashes..NORTON TO THE RESCUE!!!...give me a break.

Dude, you are so full of sh*t your eyes must be brown.

I have had NAV installed on ALL my systems. You know how many times they have crashed because of it??? Try 0. I ONLY installed NUM onto OSX, know how many times I have had OS X crash since I did that??? Again, try 0. Granted, you may be correct when it comes to OS 9.x, BUT when you talk about OS X, you are dead wrong.

I do not have Norton Firewall, and don't have any intention of purchasing it. I don't need it, since I have a hardware firewall (the one built into the latest airport base station).

I have had NUM SAVE more systems then I care to count, over the past several years.

Don't blame Norton for your stupidity in either using it, installing it, or not updating it.
 
I think what it all comes down to is proper maintenance of your system...

there are some who will claim that they should not have to use any utilities on their systems at all...that they should just work...this is pure ignorance...and I'm sure someone here will remember exactly which thread I'm speaking of...

there are others who will say that NSW is cr@p and not to use it...that it will crash your system...blah...blah....blah...

what I'm starting to think is that these people who are having all of these troubles do not have a clue as how to properly maintain their systems...point blank...

I've been running OS X on my TiBook for about 9 months now...and it's been my startup system for about 7 months...not once have I had a kernel panic...nor have I had any serious issues with anything else...I'm not saying that I know it all...that's what we have Alpha for...but I will say that I've learned from my experience with Mac systems that properly maintaining it will, in most cases if not all, keep your system virtually free of serious problems...

I would have to disagree with iH8Quark on Norton being cr@p...I use NSW 1.0 as my only disc utility for my machine...and it's done wonders for the fragmentation that X can do to a hard drive...
