do apple make their own hardware?

what do apple actually manufacture in mac computers/laptops?

ive heard they get the hard drives and ram from other manufacturers.

why dont the mac specs list details about motherboards?

some people say apple actually make the operating system and the hardware. is this true?

which parts in an apple computer are actually developed and made by apple?
that you cant get from other third party companies.

Apple make the OS and iLife that come with new Macs.

The logicboards are Apple custom designed, along with the cases etc. They are actually manufactured by third parties to Apple specifications: Apple don't own any factories anymore...

they do make the operating system, they dont usually make design the hardware it runs on.

the way i understand it is that OS X recognizes certain parts of each hardware, therefore third party hardware would not be usable.
 
There is no computer manufacturer who makes every component of their computers. All manufacturers use other vendors for RAM, hard drives, CPUs, GPUs, etc.

ooh sry bout that, just so u know the title of the thread is awkward, start using the word "does" instead of do everywhere
 
I think all the text messaging on phones is contributing to a new generation of people who don't spell or use proper grammar. It will be interesting to see what future books and newspapers will look like!

Exactly! :D It never ceases to amaze me how many in the forums are college students and they seem to not know how to spell, punctuate, capitalize or form grammatically correct sentences. What are they teaching these days? I majored in computer science (yes, they DID have computers back then!) and we were taught that spelling and punctuation can affect writing code, so we'd better learn to do it accurately!

Isn't the OS based off of BSD? Last time i checked OSX is just BSD with a aqua overlay...so technically, you can say they don't full make the OS. Unlike windows for example.

Not anymore:

"Leopard is an Open Brand UNIX 03 Registered Product, conforming to the SUSv3 and POSIX 1003.1 specifications for the C API, Shell Utilities, and Threads. Since Leopard can compile and run all your existing UNIX code, you can deploy it in environments that demand full conformance — complete with hooks to maintain compatibility with existing software."

That means Leopard is a fully registered UNIX version, not just a mod of another version. See also:

"No freely available BSD system has been registered as SUS compliant.

Darwin is an open source operating system based on FreeBSD: it is essentially the open source subset of Mac OS X. Darwin is compliant with the SUS 03."

Technically, few companies actually manufacture their products themselves, and even fewer manufacture all parts their products are comprised of. It simply isn't cost-effective. And who is most likely to make the highest quality hard drive/RAM? Someone focusing on that area, or someone focusing on nothing/everything?

In my opinion however, I'd say a company manufactures their products if it at least comes up with the schematics+design and is the party ordering the production of it.

Well, you can get away with "based on BSD", but "just BSD with aqua overlay" is a bit far from reality. The operating system kernel is way different for starters. Slapping Aqua onto FreeBSD won't make it Mac OS X (even though FreeBSD is a very nice system).

Additionally, Windows contains code not initially written by Microsoft, so I guess they don't make their OS either. ;)

NO. apple makes no hardwares. apple might 'design' the shape of them. such as tell hardware makers 'i want this thing to be this large'. many pc makers do the same. asus. hp. dell. etc

Thats an improper exaggeration, don't you think?

do us a favor, compare windows Vista and your so-called OS that windows based on, and then compare Leopard and FreeBSD and All Open OSes that apple copied over for OSX.

I think its obvious which one is really rely on the "ancestors".

Its fascinating you want to demeaning the FreeBSD and other Unix sources of their contribution to OSX.

yeah, FreeBSD +Aqua!=OSX, but hey, FreeBSD and Unix is THE HARD part of OSX's equation.

Actually I wouldn't think of it as an improper exaggeration as much as of me interpreting the statement "make their OS", getting ripped out of context and then blown out of proportion.

Since Apple does control the source and development of the system, and a fair bit of additional work has gone into the system, I do think it is fair to say that Apple "makes their OS".

The intent of my post was to point out the ambiguity of making. I find it fascinating that you managed to read so much more into it.
