I had this vivid dream last night. The iPod Touch had gotten some boring updates (yes, GPS), but the amazing new product was the new Nano. About the same size as it is now, but more rectangular, and sporting it's own touchscreen. No browser, but wifi support for all the network related apps. Although lower resolution than the Touch, it does run Touch/iPhone apps. Accelerometer too. For those who insist on a click wheel there was one on the back. It had a sliding cover you could leave on if you didn't need it. Same prices as current Nanos, but no 4gb model.

There. BTW, my vivid dreams rarely come true.

Wow, what you just described sounds nothing like a nano should ever be (to me anyways). Plain and simply it is a beautiful and SIMPLE music/video player and should stay that way IMHO. A click wheel on the back seems incredibly difficult to use and all the components would make this the biggest nano ever. Keep dreaming . . . :p

The cool thing was that they layed the new touch Nano on top of the old one to show it was the same length, and a little narrower. All screen. No thicker. The fellow demontrating it showed how he simply used his middle finger to work the clickwheel while holding this nano between thumb and first finger, yet suggested most wouldn't bother once used to the touchscreen. Most people used to working their nanos blind in a pocket would find it exactly the same to use.

I've got a small, nano-sized touchscreen player from HipStreet (which probably inspired the dream) and all it needs is the iPod Touch UI to be the perfect baby Touch/New Nano.

Exactly my problem with the "back clickwheel" idea. The Nano is very commonly the entry-level iPod. Many who have never even touched an iPod get involved with them through the Nano. So the concept of adding a feature SPECIFICALLY for veteran iPod users is significantly flawed for this reason.

If someone has never used a click wheel before, how on earth are they supposed to learn it backwards, while still upholding Apple's famous ease-of-use standards?

It's not a bad idea for those of use who are experienced with the click wheel. But keep in mind, not everyone is.

I don't see a nano sized touch ever working practically. The screen just isn't big enough, even if it was the size of the whole nano.

Which is why you don't have to learn it. The Touchscreen on the front works exactly like the iPod Touch, only smaller.

Remember please that this was only a vivid dream. I just watched it, I didn't write it. ;)

I predict Apple grows so fond of the profits they make from the Apps store that either the Nano gets a touchscreen and the ability to run those apps, or they introduce a whole new product that IS a smaller touchscreen than the current Touch. Bigger becomes unpocketable. Smaller becomes armbandable.

No, it's not a dream this time. 4th Dimension Thinking.

Please disagree. I'll have to buy one if it happens, and I REALLY don't need another device. :(

I dunno. It'd be hard to implement something like that, 4D (just reminded me, I subscribe to your blog! Quite interesting stuff.) I think the Touch is just big enough. Any smaller and it'd be really hard to implement the old stuff. Maybe add a seperate store for nano apps, but....

I KNEW there was a nanoTouch out there: HERE!

China keeps pumping out the iPod Touch clones. As soon as I see one with more than a 320x240 screen, plus wifi and bluetooth, I'll buy one to have a look.

If you're following my blog, I'm expecting the new cheap Coby 480x272 touchscreen player this week, and I'll be reviewing several headhones in the near future.

*TECHNICALLY* you did write it. Subconsciously that is. It was your dream after all. Unless your getting some signal from the Reality Distortion Field ™ generator. ;)

It's not a reality distorter. It's a 4th dimension generator, and I must have left it turned on that night! ;)
If Apple doesn't do a touchscreen Nano, someone else will. The iPod Touch is a fine size, but still a big lump in a case on a belt clip. Something nano size, that can be easily arm banded yet offer all the functionality of the Touch would find a big market I'm sure. It might be as simple as eliminating one row and one column of icons, for a 3x4 array on the nanotouch. Eliminate the top trim area, and reduce the bottom trim, perhaps making that whole lower area the Home button.

Just more mental exercise. I'd buy one though!

You may, but keep in mind that the iPod Touch is being viewed more and more as a PDA every day. And with PDA's, screen "real estate" is a big deal; as in, the more the better. So, the crowd buying for those functions (a fairly large crowd, I'd venture) wouldn't have any interest in a nano-ized version of it :-/

The Touch is a lump, but I think its worth it. It is a bit large for an arm strap, though... which is why I use the shuffle when I go climbing! :D

Exactly. A touchscreen Nano doesn't need the PDA functions. It's to appeal to all those who would have bought a nano because they like it's size and price, yet are just a little jealous of the Touch's touchscreen and apps. Those of us that bought the Touch when it first came out bought it with no promise that it would ever be more than it was. It didn't have email or apps, nor any other "PDA" qualities. While I'm delighted my Touch has evolved, I see a huge market for something less like a touchscreen Nano.

This is true. Now, in this device, do you imagine it using current apps, or requiring new ones? It would seem to me that due to the change of hardware, new apps would be required.

usedHONDA from DeviantART created what would be an iPod mini with touch interface.

i think it looks pretty cool but would be harder to use.
