I did two quick searches and didn't find anything, but I'm sure someone here will know.

This week, I decided to take care of lousy reception and jump into the digital television era before things were obsolete. I bought a combination VCR/DVD recorder with an ATSC tuner. It's Panasonic model DMR-EZ485V and I'm using it on a 720p LCD t.v. using the 1080i compatible input over component video. (Yes, I'd like to use the HDMI output, but I need an HDMI->DVI converter and more cable.)

I was looking at a Samsung HDTV set top box that processed "all 18 ATSC formats" or something like that but I hesitated to spend $180 for just the box.

So, I'm watching the various digital channels and for the most part, they all work well. I'm seeing how there is a mix of 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios, depending on content. I didn't expect any widescreen, as I thought that 480i was not a widescreen format.

Did I get the HDTV compatibility with the recorder and save money?

Thanks for your help!
