MotionX's Free Dice App a 'Must Get'

MotionX has released a free app called MotionX Dice [App Store]. The free dice application provides you with five dice that can be rolled by simply shaking your iPhone. The physics and visualizations serve as the basis for their $4.99 game MotionX Poker [App Store].

The $4.99 Poker game uses the same dice-rolling technology. By also adding betting structure and the ability to unlock higher tables and dice, MotionX has done an excellent job in creating an enjoyable gaming experience. (Full review).

For those who have little interest in Dice poker, however, this free Dice app is a must download just to experience their dice-rolling simulation.

Good for them but who doesn't have this app already? It is one of the best games to come out on the iPhone platform and they got it right from the start.

...

is it just me or does this seem a bit ironic?

We're going from real dice, to random number generators, back to virtual dice.

Before you know it we'll be rolling virtual dice in Diablo 3 rather than relying on a random number generator to speed up the combat.

I've purchased a lot of iPhone games, but MotionX Poker is the one I keep going back to. Simple, addictive, great-looking, and fun. Nice to see a free version on the app store.

Um.... is anyone else NOT seeing this on the phone's App Store? I can see it on iTunes, but not in the App Store. Also, I did a regular search in iTunes, and it didn't show up that way (only the poker version). The only way to get to it was clicking on the link in this article. I also did NOT see this show up earlier today, and I check the app store pretty regularly -- what gives?

I'm super excited they finally made this, but not excited about downloading in iTunes and then syncing to my phone. I try and avoid that whenever possible, as it takes forever.

Looks like it's just 6-sided dies only, though. They should release another paid version that has customizable multi-sided dice for other types of games. They'd make a KILLING!

With apps that have just come out, it takes time to appear on the iPhone and in searches.

I'm looking in the iTunes App Store (on desktop) and by category. I still don't see it. Can you provide some info on how to get this app?

Or maybe a youtube video would save everybody the trouble? I can't see how this would be a 'must download.'

A video wouldn't really do it justice.. you have to feel how it is in your hands as you roll the dice... very realistic, and surprisingly compelling... PLUS, you can use it for all sorts of dice games, so it's pretty cool. It's free, just try it....

Perhaps I'm stepping outside the lines by saying this, but the post smacked of spam and sponsorship. I doubt that's actually the case, but isn't there a website (toucharcade.com) devoted to iPhone games?

I wonder when the Dungeons & Dragons crowd is going to get in on the action? Imagine an iPhone application that has all the dice required (4, 6, 8 10, 12, 20, etc.), that lets you pick the ones you want to roll at any given time (a 4- and 6-sided, two or three 6-sided, etc.), and rolls them for you like this application does. You could even give each individual die its own color to designate them from each other, or good vs. evil or whatever. Give it some sort of Lord of the Rings graphics, et voila! All 10 D&D players in the world with iPhones never have to worry about carrying along their dice to a game again.

Not that I've ever played Dungeons & Dragons in my life or anything like that.

You can say what you want. I don't see how this is seems like spam or sponsorship.

1) It's a free app.
2) It's not a game.

I would have gotten so far by now, but thanks to the latest OS updates, I had to restore so many times and even start from scratch, losing all my coins. Would have been nice if it stored the progress on a server.

Well, for free I'll cut them some slack. But I agree; a D&D version would be awesome. As it is, Dice can be pretty useful. My wife and I love playing Yahtzee, and this would make a good substitute for the bulky dice, cup and board. We can just jot down the dice we want to keep and then reduce the number of dice for the next roll.

Hmm...it's interesting, intriguing, and fun to play with when bored. Must download though, no. (I am talking about just the free dice here, not the poker game)

I have no clue at all as to why this would be considered a 'must' have app.

If you knew anything about MacRumors at all, you would know:

1.) touchArcade is run by arn
2.) arn would never spam or unfairly review an app

My wife discovered that there are holding areas to store each die you want to keep (those squares at the bottom, probably a holdover from the poker game). So this will work great for Yahtzee!

While it is realistic motion, it isn't what I expected. Shaking the iPhone simply invokes a random roll routine, completely oblivious to the orientation of the device or the intensity of the shake. I was hoping that the dice would react to gravity.

While that's a good initial thought, think about what happens then if you are passing the iPhone around during a game. You would have to be careful to hold it mostly level at all times, or the dice could shift and roll whenever you moved it. No, I think this is a good implementation.

Still, might be good as an option.
