you know, this really wouldnt be anything to worry about if we finally got one simple thing on the iPod... 16BIT/44.1KHZ STEREO RECORDING! for the love of god apple, or SOME 3rd party company.. this feature alone would put Minidisc recorders straight down the tubes in an instant! Now if Sony suddenly decides to add Uploading capabilities AND adds OSX support, i might have to go BACK to minidisc, and sell my iPod... sheesh, i hope not...

Sony Corp. (SNE) has developed a technology that boosts the audio recording capacity of its mini-discs from the current 80 minutes to a whopping 40 hours.
Holy crap! That's quite an improvement!

That's just what I needed for my first smile of the day. thanks

This is much more than using some of the error correction space like on a normal CDR. Can this tech be applied to normal CD's?

doesn't seem like that amazing of an accomplishment to me. all they did is appy a compression scheme. it's like going from aiff (cd) to mp3.

i also agree if apple were allow high def recording that it could certainly knock minidisc out of the picture!

thing is they were already using compression on minidiscs, so unless this is a newer, denser disc with different physical properties... i cant actually see how they could manage to get 40hrs of music on their current format of disc, and have it still sounding remotely decent.
