Hiya

I just bought a 12" powerbook, the old 867Mhz model with 256Mb RAM, superdrive, 60Gb, OS X 10.3.2 installed 3 days ago by me and all updates applied.

3 times now, when the battery gets to around the "1 hour" left mark, the powerbook will suddenly sleep, and not respond to anything until I plug in AC power. I suspected a dodgy battery, but I'm open to the possibility that it's a software fault. The log from the last time it happened is at the bottom of my post -sorry for the length, wasn't sure how much to include.

I'm new to the Mac, having ditched my XP after playing with a friend's iBook. This is a second hand unit, but is in excellent condition: should I be speaking to the seller?

Really appreciate any/all ideas people may have - I want my baby to work!

Cheers
ben

hey I have the SAME EXACT problem. seems to have started kind of suddenly. i have a feeling it's got something to do with 10.3.2. at least i hope so. i have the same configuration as you, and i just added an airport card recently. i'm keeping an eye on this thread.

- I can see the problem from here, you have three smilies in your error log that are quite clearly surplus to requirement.

a happy accident. Sorry this is completely off topic but at least it will keep this thread higher up.
Little thing pleased little mind :p
sorry again.

There was a battery update installed 09th Jan 2004....

Is this just massively under/overestimating the amount of juice I have left?

Is there a 3rd party piece of software that will tell me how full the battery is without referencing Apple's figure, if you see what I mean?

Like I said, I'm new to Apple - is this sort of shoddy update common ;) Can't see a way to uninstall the update...

yes i installed the same update Dec 17, i'm thinking this may culprit. i don't of any software off hand but i'm sure there is. try versiontracker. up dates are usually very good, this would be the first to have messed anything up for me. a good idea would be to head over to Apple's 12" Discussio Board and post there, or do a search. i always find at least one other person with the same problem. it's also better because Apple will see it.

Now it's charrging, and has gone from saying 1h14m to full (which seemed reasonable at 23%) to 3h47m until full, which at 77% seems very unreasonable.

Gnngh.

So, do people think it's software or battery related?

Mac discussions has no identical problem, but I have posted a q there as well. Here's hoping I haven't bought a duff...

How do I check what sort of warranty I've got?

Cheers ppls

Solved

For the benefit of future generations, and the other guy with the same problem:

Works fine now - suspect unit hasn't been used for a while and has gotten confused.

All I did was reset the Power Management Unit (PMU) as suggested - see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 for full instructions. I also did a battery calibration, ie full charge, followed by full discharge until sleep, and then full charge.

Cheers guys.
